La Residencia

This hideaway in the island's north-west is a beautiful jumble of 16th and 17th century buildings above the village of Deia and deserves a place in any list of the top five Mallorca hotels. These converted manor houses have been decorated in a contemporary Majorcan style, and some suites have their own pools. There is a spa, gym and tennis courts for the more active, and the hotel has a private beach. Food is excellent here, and there are various eating options in Deia. www.orient-express.com.

Hotel Formentor

The first of Mallorca's great hotels, this was built in 1929 and sits in a remarkable 3,000 acres on the Formentor Peninsula in the far north of the island. There are 127 rooms, three restaurants, two swimming pools, terraces, water sports, a sandy beach and unforgettable food. The hotel is an ideal place for a quieter Majorcan holiday since there are comparatively few tourists in the vicinity, although trips to the Formentor Peninsula are popular. www.hotelformentor.net.

Mardavall Hotel and Spa

With one of the largest spas in the Balearics - thalassotherapy is the speciality of the house - and two golf courses, Mardavall is well suited to both players and pampered alike. All 133 rooms in this Palma Bay hotel have sea views and terraces, Bang & Olufsen televisions and local art on the walls. Should you make it out of the hotel, it's just one kilometre to Puerto Portals with its restaurants and shopping. www.mardavall-hotel.com

Hotel Melia de Mar

Renovated in the late 1990s, this supremely comfortable hotel in the residential area of Iletas has a marble-floored lobby, original art in the bedrooms and is just 10 minutes from the centre of Palma. The hotel has its own botanical gardens and is mere metres from the sea and a small private beach. All the rooms face the water. www.solmelia.com.

Gran Son Net

This bright pink, boutique hotel is in the Serra de Tramuntana in the south-west corner of the island. Converted from a 17th -century chapel, it has just 25 rooms, and its art collector owner has put in works by Hockney, Christoph, Warhol and Chagall. Rooms are large, bathrooms are marble, and the design is classic Majorca with white walls, natural stone floors and rustic wood beams. An old olive press has been converted into one of the two restaurants. www.sonnet.es.
