For some, 'the Strip', the road with most of the bars on it, has become one of the defining images of Majorcan tourism.
In an effort to control the excesses, the local council banned the organised pub crawls that caused such merry havoc, forcing tourists to arrange their own drinking. Thankfully, help is available from the PRs ('touts' to some): the good-looking men and women paid to wander the streets to drum up business for the bars and clubs, beguiling revellers with offers of reduced price entry, free drinks and other specials.
Recommending bars from among so many glitzy offerings is always tricky. All claim to have a great atmosphere and to belt out the best tunes. The simplest advice is to do what everyone else enjoying Magaluf nightlife is doing: have a wander, do a bit of sampling, and make up your own mind. However, to suggest two, you could do a lot worse than the Red Lion Pub at the bottom of the hill, and Chaplin's right in the middle of the Strip.
On the club side of things, Magaluf nightlife offers a toned-down version of Ibiza. It does not have the reputation of its Balearic sister, but some of the big-name DJs will still come to town to play some sets.
The giant among Magaluf's clubs, both in size and reputation, is BCM, an absolutely vast nightclub which is filled with three million gallons of bubbles on its foam nights. Don't go in your Versace. Some of the best-known dance DJs in Britain play here during the summer.
Other leading lights of the club world include the 70s-themed Carwash, Bananas, and Boomerangs, with its mix of R&B and hip hop.
These are not cheap evenings as drinks can be quite expensive in the nightclubs. Some charge substantial entry fees (over €20) and then include free drinks, but these will probably be cheap cocktails served in plastic beakers
If you are sampling Magaluf nightlife with your children, head to the Pirates Adventure themed dinner/show. Just make sure you avoid the weekly adults' night, usually Sunday.
