Many British tourists go on holidays to Palma Nova in south-west Majorca because it is easily accessible, offers sun, sea and sand, and does everything a resort can possibly do to accommodate the needs of its visitors.

It is not a place to come for a taste of Majorcan life - an inability to speak Spanish will not mark you out from most people around - but in terms of delivering on its promise of British-style fun in a hot climate, Palma Nova cannot be faulted. The sequence of developments may not be the most beautiful, but they guarantee a wide range of accommodation, dining and nightlife options. You can budget or splash out as you wish.

Many people going on holidays to Palma Nova will intend to do little other than lie by the pool or sea, go swimming occasionally, and go out at night. It may not attract the same hedonistic crowd as neighbouring Magaluf, but Palma Nova is not quiet. There is a raft of English-style pubs, plus McDonald's, Burger King and Pizza Hut. Indian, Chinese and Mexican food is available in abundance; Spanish cuisine is rarer.

Daytime activities on holidays to Palma Nova revolve around hotel swimming pools - be prepared to 'book' your sun lounger early in the morning - and the three sandy beaches of Es Carregador, Playa de Palma Nova and Son Maties. All have Blue Flag ratings for cleanliness and provide various water sports. While land-lubbers will never be far from a drier alternative, be it tennis, golf, cycling, bowling and karting.

Many tour operators offer package holidays to Palma Nova, and you can stay in hotels, apartments or villas; B&B, half-board or full-board as you wish. Operators to consider include First Choice (www.firstchoice.co.uk), Thomson (www.thomsonholiday.co.uk), Thomas Cook (www.thomascook.co.uk), Portland (www.portland-direct.co.uk) and JMC (www.jmc.com).

It is easy to reach the resort from Britain because there are flights to Palma from 20 UK airports and the journey takes little over two hours. Palma Nova is 15 kilometres west of the airport and you can be at the resort in 15 to 20 minutes if traffic runs smoothly. Moreover, there is a good local bus service coming back the other way should you want to head back to the capital for a day - something that is strongly advised.
