Formentor Majorca - Mallorca Travel Destinations Spain

The Formentor Peninsula is Majorca's northernmost spike, jutting 20 kilometres into the Mediterranean. It is a beautiful place: sea-cliffs studded with pine trees soar to heights of 200 metres and development is minimal.

The road leading along the peninsula's spine, which starts at Port de Pollenca, can get busy in summer so you should visit early or late in the day to avoid traffic. After six kilometres, it's worth stopping at the Mirador de Colomer for the views of the whole peninsula. You can also see the Illot de Colomer offshore, where many birds nest.

Further on you come to the kilometre-long beach at Cala de Pi de la Posada (or 'Platja de Formentor'). Pine woods lead down to a beach from where you can look across the bay to the mountains. There is some excellent diving here, but the beach gets a little crowded in the summer.

After passing through a tunnel you emerge at the Cap de Formentor. From here you can see Cala Figuera, the most inaccessible beach on the island, but one still reachable by foot. At the very end of the peninsula is a lighthouse, built in 1860, which is out of bounds. You can grab a drink at the cafe nearby where there are incredible views from the terrace: in clear weather you can see the town of Ciudadela on Menorca, 40 kilometres away.

The birdwatching in this part of the island is first-class. Formentor is famous for its breeding colony of Eleonora's Falcons, which nest in the cliffs, as well as its Rock Doves, Blue Rock Thrushes, Northern Ravens and Pallid Swifts. Black Kites and Western Honey-Buzzards also fly overhead. Away from the sky, you may see wild goats and lizards among the rocks and scrub, and dolphins out at sea.

There is no accommodation on the peninsula apart from at the luxurious Hotel Formentor (www.hotelformentor.net) in Pi de la Posada, near the beach. Built in 1926, it was one of the first great hotels on Majorca and has hosted Winston Churchill, Haile Selassie, Charlie Chaplin and F Scott Fitzgerald. If you cannot afford the rates, you can still eat in one of the three restaurants (only one open out of season, booking recommended) or get a drink at the bar.
