Formentor Hotels Majorca - Mallorca Travel Destinations Spain
Historians writing about Majorca often describe the 1929 opening of the Hotel Formentor as one of the foundation stones for the growth in Majorcan tourism in the latter half of the 20th century.
There were already hotels on the island, but nothing like this. It was built by Argentine poet Adan Diehl, who advertised his new hotel in lights on the Eiffel Tower. Sitting in glorious isolation in 3,000 acres on the Formentor Peninsula, the Hotel Formentor attracted the leading lights of the world stage. The artists who had established themselves in the Pollença region were soon being outshone by the likes of Edward VIII, Winston Churchill, Charlie Chaplin, F Scott Fitzgerald, the Aga Khan and Grace Kelly. And the glitterati have shown no signs of abandoning the hotel in more recent years, with the Dalai Lama, Helmut Kohl, Elizabeth Taylor and the Spanish royal family all spending time at this northern outpost.
Seventy years or tourism have not impacted on the hotel's isolation, since it remains the only development on the peninsula. This is an emptier, quieter part of the island and you can look eastwards across the bay and see no high-rises. Hotel guests used to have the beach to themselves, but now it gets crowded with day-trippers exploring the peninsula, with its magnificent views and abundant birdlife.
The Hotel Formentor has 127 rooms, all refurbished in 2002. Facilities include two outdoor swimming pools (one of which is heated in winter), a health and beauty centre with sauna, solarium and gym, terraces, five tennis courts, minigolf, cinema, horse riding and water sports. It is the only top-quality hotel on the island near a beach, and was used as the setting for a film version of Agatha Christie's ' Evil Under the Sun ' with Peter Ustinov, Diana Rigg and Maggie Smith.
Diners at the Hotel Formentor have three options. El Colomer is the premier restaurant and is the only one that is open all year round. El Pi, the grill restaurant, is open in summer only, as is Platja Mar, which serves lunches on the beach.
