Based on a sequence of small, sandy coves, it is oriented more towards families than groups of teenagers.
To read most Mallorcan guidebooks you would barely know that the resort existed, and it is frequently held up as an example of how tourist development on the island has gone wrong.
Yet the people who stay in Calas de Mallorca tend to forget to be appalled by the concrete development and instead enjoy a happy, family-oriented holiday. If you want a rowdy night-life or easy accessibility to other parts of the island then this resort will not suit you. But if it's a beach holiday you're after, with good swimming and not too many drunken tourists, you will be quite content.
The resort is on a cliff so there is a reasonable walk to the beaches, but they are worth the effort because they have clean sand and shallow water and are ideal for kids. The three coves are Cala Antena, Cala Domingos Grans (which has a Blue Flag rating for cleanness) and Cala Domingos Petis.
A pleasant walk along the cliff tops takes you from one cove to another, or for a different view you can go out to sea on one of the glass-bottomed boats which make trips up and down the coast. Make sure you're on a boat whose captain will allow some swimming time.
Transfer time from the airport in Palma is 90 to 120 minutes. It is a complicated route, and can be quite testing for new arrivals in hire cars. However, it's worth hiring a car because it makes getting away from the resort so much easier. Calas de Mallorca is slightly isolated from the main attractions on the island and public transport on the east coast is not great. There are buses to Palma, Porto Cristo and Manacor, but a tour is the simplest option for visiting other sights if you are car-less.
In the evenings Calas de Mallorca does not exactly pulsate with life. Much of the entertainment is hotel-based and parents can watch their children playing from some of the bars. For something a bit livelier, try the Rock Cola bar or Jupiter's disco.
