The main resort on the east coast of Majorca, Cala Millor is a busy tourist development which does not have the same overtly hedonistic associations as the Palma Bay area.

It is aimed more at families than its south-western counterparts and lacks their preponderance of all-night bars and discos, although in the middle of summer it can still seem brash and noisy.

Cala Millor (' Better Bay ' in English) began life as a tourist resort in 1933 with the building of the first hotel. Since that time it has grown to16,000 beds, capturing the nearby fishing village of Cala Bona in the process.

The resort is centred on a wide 1.5-kilometre sandy beach which slopes gently to the water. The beach is backed by a promenade that takes you all the way north to Cala Bona. If you want a longer walk, head south instead for three kilometres, beyond the Punta de n'Amer headland (the southernmost point of Cala Millor) to the villages of Sa Coma and S'Illot.

Many of the hotels have direct access to the beach, with the resort's pedestrian zone and its wealth of shops and restaurants at the rear. There are lots of British and Irish-style pubs with bingo, karaoke and quiz nights: Cala Millor knows what its tourists want and serves it up gladly.

The daytime activities that persuade tourists off their sun loungers tend to be more sporting than cultural. There's cycling, golf, riding, tennis, paragliding, diving, water skiing and windsurfing. And glass-bottomed boats take you out to sea to admire marine life and to swim in the deep.

Most of the bigger hotels and apartment blocks will provide activities to keep children entertained during the day, but if you want to do something en famille, you could try mini golf or the mini train which runs along the coast between the neighbouring resorts.

All of Majorca is within a day's drive from Cala Millor. You can hire a vehicle from Automoto Car Hire (+34 971 58 66 27) and go exploring. Palma is easily reachable at just 1¼ hour's drive away, although this can be two hours if traffic is bad. If you need a taxi to get to or from the airport, expect to pay a little over 50 euros.
