Cala d'Or is the smartest of the resorts on the east coast of Majorca. Its prices are higher than in the resorts of the Palma Bay area and consequently it attracts a wealthier stratum of tourists. If you are not forced by circumstance to pursue the cheapest holiday then the lure of independent living, without tour reps and shuttle buses, might lead you to rent - or even buy - one of the Cala d'Or villas.

Following the style established in the 1930s by architect Pep Costa Ferrer, many Cala d'Or villas are Ibizan style: low-slung and whitewashed. And while property prices in Spain are generally lower than in the UK, Cala d'Or is one of those places where wealthy foreigners keep values high.
Renting
Rental prices soar during the peak months and some properties are more than three times as expensive in July as in October. A three-star, three-bedroom property within walking distance of the centre of Cala d'Or could erupt from under 700 euros per week to over 2,200.
Most properties are hired out by the week with a Saturday change-over. If you want to do something different you will have to hunt around but you may find it impossible during the summer season.

For something more rustic you could try Villa Parade (www.villaparade.co.uk), which has some fincas - Majorca's old stone farmhouses - on its books. However, most of the operators dealing with Cala d'Or villas have properties in town, not outside.

If you want to buy, Calador Properties (www.caladorproperties.com) specialises in Cala d'Or villas and has a selection from around the 200,000 euro mark, but you probably won't get more than two bedrooms for that price. It also sells plots of land should you wish to build your own property.
