Alcudia and its port are separated by a couple of miles of road and a million miles of atmosphere. One is a medieval town with narrow streets and old churches; the other a rumbustious resort offering the sun, sea and nightlife combination beloved of so many visiting Britons. The hotels in Alcudia reflect this difference.
The most atmospheric are in the town, sited in centuries-old buildings with individually designed bedrooms and charm around every corner. A hotel purist wouldn't dream of staying elsewhere. However, some people want to be by the beach and prefer the more festive atmosphere of the resort hotels. There are plenty of these in Port d'Alcudia.
IN TOWN
The most interesting of the hotels in Alcudia is probably Es Convent, set in a 14th -century building inside the walled centre of the town. Hotel Can Tem is a 17th -century house on a pedestrianised street. It has just four rooms, so you will need to book early in summer. The atmosphere is antiques meet modern Majorcan painting, and there is a garden outside. Carrer de l'Església 14, tel 971 243 537, www.hotelcantem.com.
Hotel Sant Jaume is a renovated 19th -century house. It has six delightful rooms - all pale walls and dark woods - and a patio with a fountain. c /Sant Jaume 6, tel 971 549 419, www.hotelsantjaume.com.
AT THE PORT
The four-star, hacienda-style Alcudiamar has 106 rooms and suites and is located right on the marina. It has fountains, palm trees and a large swimming pool. The restaurant serves buffet meals. c/Paseo Maritimo 1, tel 971 897 215, www.botel-alcudiamar.com
The four-star Maritimo is 150 metres from the beach. It has two pools and a separate children's pool plus live shows every evening. Crta Arta - Pto. Alcudia, tel 971 890 193, www.grupotel.com.
Owned by the same chain, Parc Natural is one of the grandest hotels in Alcudia. A five-star affair on Playa de Muro, it has all the facilities you would expect - pools indoors and out, saunas, and separate buffet and à la carte restaurants. Crta Alcudia - Arta, tel 971 892 017, www.grupotel.com.
