All the best magicians and illusionists have done their time in this city of entertainment, and the current line-up of magic shows upholds this fine tradition. If you are hoping to see a fantastic magic show during your stay in Vegas, look no further for recommendations of the best on offer.
No list of the finest magic shows would exclude the great David Copperfield. Both critics and audiences alike have hailed him as ‘the greatest illusionist of our time’, and his current show at the MGM Grand is truly a sight to behold. This magician doesn’t just practice his craft, but has actually redefined it. In this show, he makes members of the audience disappear to gasps of amazement. His status as the thirteenth highest paid entertainer in the world is well deserved, and do not miss this opportunity to see the master in action in this one and a half hours of pure entertainment.
They have had huge success with their television series as well as their live shows, and Penn and Teller now have a permanent show at the Rio Hotel. This duo is at the top of their game, with their performance including guns, knives, a showgirl and gorilla! Their approach is slightly unconventional, as they reveal the secrets to most of their tricks…but they still manage to leave the audience perplexed! Their show is filled with irreverent humour, and they are renowned for their ‘intelligent’ take on the magic show medium.
The Amazing Johnathan is appearing at the Riviera Hotel. He combines magic with a razor sharp wit, and has become legendary for his series on Comedy Central, as well as his spectacular live shows. It is hard to beat his record for winning The World Magic Award for ‘Comic Magician of the Year’ twice – and his Vegas show does not disappoint. Everyone seems to be talking about this show, and the recent addition of Psychic Tanya as his assistant has enhanced his already magnificent performance. This is strictly for the grownups, and is restricted to over-21s.
Last but by no means least in our top rating magic shows, is Showgirls of Magic. It bills as ‘The Biggest Little Show in Town’, and lives up to this expectation by charging reasonable ticket prices whilst delivering a truly fabulous show. The combination of showgirls and magic is pure Vegas, and it includes illusions, music and hilarious comedy – not to mention a bevy of beauties very scantily clad! This show has an intimate feel as the crowd is so close to the stage, and the magic is really first-class in the baffling stakes.
At Silvertons is Dick Arthur’s show, which heralded something called the New Art of Magic. Nothing is quite what it seems on this show. You can get a sudden appearance of a helicopter, you can get a car that levitates in mid air, you can see the stripes vanish on the tiger and some spectacular stunts that don’t even need the normal curtains and staging. This is illusionism at its best, showcasing the results of years of research, invention and collaboration. You can take children under five free if they sit on your lap, you can also get two for one drinks and buffet meals.
Something completely different is provided at the Greek Isles Hotel by Dr Naughty. This x-rated hypnotist show invites volunteers up on stage, hypnotises them, and managed to unmask some of their more interesting personality traits. Their inhibitions are then demolished and they are dressed up by his assistants in some quick-change costumes. Dr Naughty then take suggestions from the audience for some “hypno-sketches”. Then he implants the suggestions into the volunteers and when he snaps his fingers the sketches start with the subjects’ natural creativity coming to the fore as make believe characters. Role-playing can be childlike and the idiosyncrasies of humanity take over. This can create a real crowd-pleasing show. No lewd behaviour takes place, no frontal nudity either and you are NEVER forced to come on stage so don’t worry!
The comedy magic shows normally contain a combination of visual gags, quirky humour and amazing sleight of hand. Mac King at Harrah’s is a good example of this. Even better known are Penn & Teller, who also do the same kind of show.
Perhaps the most bizarre show in Las Vegas is “Shock” on Bourbon Street. The Torture king will endure great pain for your entertainment. This is not for the squeamish although it’s definitely memorable.
