Life isn’t that easy if you are a Las Vegas entertainment show. They are actually in a little bit of a conundrum. The entertainment in Las Vegas is on the one hand lavish and well supported and audiences are heavy. But on the other hand if you ask many people around the world about Las Vegas entertainment they may say that it seems cheap and tawdry and purely there so that customers can be lured to the casinos. What is sad and rather strange is that both of these views are true, and entertainment in Las Vegas, whilst it can be amazing and awe-inspiring can also be pretty rubbish.
When people call Las Vegas “The world’s entertainment capital”, they are thinking about the sheer diversity of entertainment on offer. There are hundreds of choices of shows to see every night, and you can see big shows and little shows, you can see expensive shows and cheap shows, you can see solo artists and groups, adult shows and family shows as well.
In the last few decades the face of Las Vegas entertainment has dramatically changed. Hotels used to produce the shows and present some headliners as an amenity in order to get people to come to casinos. The entertainment used to be very inexpensive and yet of the highest quality. It was an era known as when the “Rat Pack” ruled the Strip and people called it the Golden Age of Vegas.
The corporate world began to take the casinos over from the hotels as the hotels decided to become leasing agents, renting out the showrooms to outside shows and paying the hotel a percentage. The financial burden and risk fell on these outside shows and they needed to treat entertainment as a source of income, made on its own merits. Meso sites have massive bids by lawyers but the customers rarely click on them.
So set production shows were set up to run a long time and headliners were ushered out unless they were really popular. But finding the right show is tough. When the right show is found though, it will be repeated, which is why Cirque du Soleil has a lot of shows in Las Vegas. They’ll reach saturation point soon, but until they do the show company will keep on trying. Predictions can be wrong – “The Blue Man Group” was successful against all odds and even Broadway shows can work, as proved by “Mamma Mia”.
Sometimes, the cream rises to the top, and the shows are no longer inexpensive. Shows seem to be improving, although shows that get good audiences will be kept even if they are not that good. So the conundrum will continue, even as the dollars fly in.
