• Mount Kilimanjaro is both the tallest mountain on the African continent and the highest free standing mountain in the world.
• Steam and Sulphur are still emitted to this day from Kilimanjaro's youngest cone, Kibo.
• Kilimanjaro is not part of a mountain range, but rather a single free- standing mountain which rises like a lone warrior above the plains of Tanzania and Kenya.
• Typically only 15% of climbers at any given time succeed with their summit attempt of Kilimanjaro.
• Kilimanjaro's summit is called Uhuru Peak which in English means 'Freedom'. Indeed this is a feeling that many climbers experience when they finally reach the 19 340 foot summit.
• The oldest person to successfully reach Uhuru Peak was Valtee Daniel aged 87 years.
• From the Shira Plateau on Mount Kilimanjaro, it is possible to see into the Amboseli National Park in Kenya which is in fact one of the largest elephant sanctuaries in the world.
• 'Poly' in Swahili means slowly and is a word that climbers will continuously hear being uttered by their guides during their summit attempt of Kilimanjaro.
• One of the Tanzanian guides who assisted the first person to officially summit Kilimanjaro, Hans Meyer, still alive today at the ripe old age of 118 years.
• 90% of individuals attempting to summit Kilimanjaro do so via the Marangu Trail. Out of these, approximately 10% manage to reach Uhuru Peak, whilst a one third succeed in making it to Gillman's Point, 600 feet below the true peak of Kili.
• On Uhuru Peak there is a wooden box containing a book in which almost every individual to reach the summit has recorded their impressions of the world from the highest point on the African continent.
