Tanzania CurrencyWhen it comes to travel in Africa, choosing between the Cash Option and Credit Cards can be a difficult decision. The national currency in the country of Tanzania is the Tanzanian shilling (TSh). Whilst larger establishments are generally willing to accept US Dollars and British Pounds, smaller shops and street vendors tend to be reluctant to trade with anything other than shillings.
Exchange rates tend to fluctuate on a daily basis. Consequently, the best option is to pay a visit to one's local bank or foreign exchange centre a couple of days prior to departure. Alternatively, it is also possible to exchange money at the Airport upon arrival. Generally, waiting until one arrives in Dar es Salaam, or any other town for that matter is not considered a viable option, due to the fact that many places charge exorbitant commission prices and are only willing to exchange amounts of $50 or higher.
How much money one will actually need is dependent on a number of factors, including the type of trip one has chosen, the duration of the climb, the means of getting to Kilimanjaro, and the tour company that one has elected to book through. As a general rule, a decent hotel room can be obtained for well under $50, whilst a satisfying meal can cost anything from $10 to $30 depending on one's taste. Many tour operators include all expenses in the overall cost of tours, aside from tips for Porters and additional Food and beverage allowances.

If one has elected to make a summit attempt via the Marangu Route, it will be possible to purchase beers and beverages at the various campsites on the mountain. Whilst US dollars are seen as an accepted means of payment, it is advisable to carry smaller notes, as change will be dealt in Tanzanian shillings.
When it comes to tipping porters, it is a good idea to keep in mind the fact that for many of them, carrying bags up and down the mountain is their only source of income. In addition, were it not for them, chances are good that the number of individuals to successfully reach the summit would decline substantially, to say the least. They will welcome any tips that they receive from shillings to dollars, and even old clothing is greatly appreciated.
