Kilimanjaro rises out of the Serengeti like a great warrior, its giant form dwarfing the landscape below. Named 'The Great White Mountain by the local tribes that exist at its foot, Kili seems to almost radiate an unstoppable sense energy that has been a source of intrigue to local tribesmen and foreign travellers alike.

Located on the Northern border of Tanzania, Kilimanjaro, or Kilima Njaro as the Swahili locals like to call it, rises an impressive 19,335ft above sea level. Formed over 500 000 years ago, this stratovolcano consists of three volcanic cones, namely Kibo, Shira and Mawenzi. Vegetation on the mountain varies from tropical rainforests to alpine desert, depending on the altitude. Temperatures on the mountain are extreme, and fauna and flora vary depending on how high up the mountain one is.

In addition to being the highest mountain on the African continent, Kilimanjaro is also the tallest mountain on earth that can be conquered by individuals without any specialist mountaineering skills. Indeed, with sufficient preparation and ample perseverance, the dream of summiting the Great Roof of Africa can become a reality for almost any dedicated walker.

There are a number of routes up the Shining Mountain, the most renowned of which being the Machame and Marangu Routes. On the Marangu Route you will be able to enjoy the comfort of bunk bedded huts and solar power, whilst on the Machame route only tented accommodation is available. Although more rustic, this route is less direct than Marangu and allows you to take in more of the spectacular mountain scenery. In addition there are also a number of less travelled routes including the Rongai, Western Breach and Lemosho Routes. Ultimately, choice of route should be based on personal preference.

The triple peaks of Kilimanjaro burn like coals in the fading light of the African sun. Tomorrow will bring with it yet another dawn, and more hopeful climbers seeking to conquer the The Great White Mountain. Some will fall at its jagged foot, beaten by the harsh terrain and lack of oxygen. Others will push on beyond the clouds, to a place as mysterious and ancient as the continent itself. The snowcapped crown of Africa, and some say, the place where earth meets heaven...
