Kauai's shopping is very tourist orientated, and has a number of shops that provide a chance to buy some souvenirs of your Hawaiian vacation to show friends and family when you get home. Sporting equipment is readily available in Kauai so don't worry if you have left something vital behind, like your surfboard! Many of the resorts have tennis and/or golf shops available. Fishing stores sell fishing supplies and permits. Hanalei is a great place for a Kauai shopping trip - other shopping centers are Kilauea or Kapaa.
North Coast Shopping
The China Young Village Shopping Center in Hanalei has a variety of shops selling casual clothing, collectors' items, health food, gifts and surfing equipment.
The Kong Lung shopping center in Kilauea is a good place to buy antiques, clothing, gifts, jewelry, ceramics, books and home accessories. Even if you aren't buying, it is an interesting place to browse.
The Lotus Gallery behind the Kong Lung shopping center is a haven for antiques and designer jewelry. Artifacts, antiques, clothing and handicrafts from India and Tibet are to be found here.
Ola's by Hanalei River on Kuhio Highway (Highway 56) is the place to go for American and Hawaiian arts and crafts. Furniture, jewelry, paintings and other artwork are clustered together in this shop.
East Coast Markets
The Coconut Marketplace in Kapaa has gift shops, clothing and sunglasses in a pseudo plantation-style setting.
Island Hemp and Cotton off Kuhio Highway (Highway 56) in Kapaa sells fashionable, stylish clothing made with natural fabrics. Island-style clothing is available so you can buy your outfit for a Kauai luau here. Another place to look for aloha clothing is Hula Girl across from Sunnyside Market.
South China Sea Trading Company and Kebanu Gallery, opposite Sunnyside Market in Kapaa, sell pottery, jewelry, woodwork, glass and furniture. The South China Sea Trading Company's exotic collection includes silk sarongs, South East Asian crafts, home accessories and mosquito nets.
Kauai Museum, 4428 Rice Street, Lihue has locally-produced handicrafts such as shell leis (garlands or necklaces) from Nihau Island, woodwork and coconut products.
South Coast
You can watch soap and candles being made in the Island Soap and Candle Works in Koloa. Walk down the main road in Koloa and you will find shops selling clothes, gifts and food.
Most of the shops in the Poipu region are very touristy and are not worth bothering with. Poipu Shopping Village, 2360 Kiahuna Plantation Drive, however is worth having a look round. Hale Mana Clothing and Gifts sell unusual, exotic gifts from different parts of the world. Incense from Provence, hand-made paper produced in Hawaii, kimonos, silk clothing and handbags are merely the tip of the iceberg.
West Coast Shopping
Hanapepe is a good place to visit for art galleries and gift shops. Collectibles and Fine Junque on Highway 50 on the way to Waimea Canyon is ideal for lovers of knickknacks and Hawaiian souvenirs.
