The lush, green, region of Princeville (Kauai's prestine resort area) was named after the Prince Albert, the son of Kamehameha IV. This area of the island's north coast has been developed for tourists and is home to the extremely plush Princeville Hotel, which is located on majestic cliffs that overlook the sea. Those into golf should try out The Prince Course, one of the best golf courses around. In fact, even those who are not into golf may be tempted to give it a go or the odd swing.
Nestling at the bottom of Princeville's sheer cliffs is Hideaways or Pali Ke Kua beach. It is possible to snorkel here during calm weather. This area boasts diverse marine life with the occasional turtle if you are lucky. To actually get there involves navigating a trail and a series of steps that will take you about ten minutes provided you don't go off the beaten track, as unfortunately the location of the beach is poorly marked. This means that is very quiet and secluded, making it perfect for a relaxed afternoon in the sunshine. The path on the way down can be a bit tricky though so it may not be suitable for the very young or unsteady. Rip currents can form when the seas are rough so please be aware of this.

Further east down a trail off Kapiolani Road near Punahele Road is a large lava pool known as Queen's Bath. There isn't much to see when the surf is high - usually during the winter - but at other times this is a wonderful, natural swimming pool. Fish swarm into the pool through the inlet from the ocean so bring an underwater camera and snorkeling equipment. Shortly before you arrive at the pool from the trail, there is a waterfall dropping straight into the ocean.
Even if you are not staying at the Princeville Hotel, it is a good place to visit for shopping or eating, or even just to come and admire the architecture. There is a health club and spa with excellent facilities. Keen tennis players can rent a tennis court at the resort's 'tennis complex.' There are plenty of other activities in the area suitable for both young and old. Horse-riding, hiking and kayaking can be easily arranged when staying in or near Princeville. This part of the north coast is very scenic and should be explored.
