Poipu and its Prized Beaches

Poipu, Kauai's gem on the sun-soaked south coast is just a short drive away from the main airport at Lihue. Poipu is best known for its wonderful beaches and glorious sunshine - so if sunbathing, water sports and miles upon miles of stunning beaches are your thing, you need to head to the south coast for your dream vacation. The only slight downside is that the wild lushness of the north coast is over an hour's drive away but otherwise Poipu is completely set up for holiday makers.

Accommodation and resort facilities are available at the Poipu Kai Resort which covers a large area between Brenneke Beach and Shipwreck Beach. Accommodation of all sorts is available in the form of condos, cottages, hotels or bed and breakfasts. Visitors looking for something a bit more upmarket can try the Hyatt Regency or the Sheraton. There is a championship golf course in the area and some of the resorts and hotels have tennis courts. Those with children should consider eating at the Shell Restaurant in the Sheraton which allows children under twelve to eat for free when accompanied by an adult. Most resorts or hotels offer a baby sitting service but the Hyatt takes this a few steps further with its extensive 'Camp Hyatt' program available for children from three to twelve years old inclusive. This includes a wide range of activities from sports to arts and crafts, and an evening child care service is available. The perfect way to keep the kids occupied while Mum and Dad have a well-earned break.

With a wide range of beaches and water activities, beach babies are spoilt for choice. Starting from the east part of Poipu, Shipwreck Beach will be the first sandy shores you will come across. This beach can be accessed from the Hyatt and is named after an old ship that was left stranded and broken on the coral reef but has long since surrended itself to the ocean. The waters are quite rough here and it is not always safe for swimming. However, although it is every sailor's nightmare, it is a beachcomber's paradise; with all sorts of interesting flotsam and jetsam being constantly washed up along the beach. The east end of the beach has been taken over by surfers, windsurfers and boogie boarders.

Brennecke Beach was partially eroded after a hurricane but has been recently restored and is now a fun beach with potential for good surfing and boogie boarding. Water sports equipment can be rented out either from the resorts, or from local stores. Kauai's Poipu Beach Park is where a lot of the action is at, with facilities for beach users, safe swimming and good snorkeling. The beach at the front of the Sheraton Resort is very picturesque and protected by an offshore reef making it a safe swimming environment. Continuing further along the coast to the west are suitable spots for scuba diving, such as Koloa Landing. There is good snorkeling along here as well
