The Poipu Kai Resort is spread across a 70-acre tropical garden in the Poipu area of Kauai on the south coast. This is the sunnier, dry part of the island and would suit those looking for a bit of fun in the sun and trying their hand at some of the island's more popular water sports. The resort offers self-contained units and condos which are managed by different agencies. Therefore style and quality of accommodation, and price tends to vary greatly within the same resort. This little slice of heaven is quite spread out, meaning the unite are not on top of each other which has the advantage of giving people that privacy and space they so desperately seek when they come here on holiday.
The resort is located between Brennecke Beach and Shipwreck Beach. Brennecke Beach had to be restored as it was being eroded away. It is a good area for body boarding. Shipwreck Beach is usually unsafe for swimming but is still a popular spot for water activities such as surfing, boogie boarding and windsurfing. Although the water is not particularly hospitable, the beach itself is a very pleasant environment for sunbathing and walking along. Lots of interesting "articles" get washed up onto the golden shores making it ideal for beachcombing. Whale-spotting is another popular activity from December to April.
Amenities offered by the Poipu Kai Resort include nine tennis courts (both soft and hard surface courts are available) with a pro shop, seven pools and three spas. In addition to these, the resort is very close to the Hyatt Regency Resort Hotel with access to the shopping and dining contained therein. There is a championship golf course nearby. Equipment for biking, snorkeling and other beach activities can be rented locally. A variety of activities are available just in the surrounding area: volleyball, kayaking, rafting, jet skiing, sailing, scuba diving, fishing, parasailing, skydiving, helicopter tours, hiking, or mountain biking. Both adults and children are catered for.
The accommodation is decorated in Hawaiian furnishings for that total "island feel", and most units have lanais (balconies or private outside seating areas). The Regency area of the resort is more upmarket and offers a higher standard of accommodation than the rest of the Poipu Kai. The Regency has central air conditioning and new buildings decorated with deluxe Hawaiian-style furnishings. As well as better-quality facilities they also offer very good service in the condos as well. The Poipu Sands area of the resort has the best access to a beach.
Different rental agencies offer different rates and different standards of accommodation and service so it is worth shopping around. Some offer packages and special deals if you are traveling with children or are on your honeymoon so ask about special rates when you book. Sometimes children get discounts on activities, free meals when accompanied by an adult or free accommodation if under a certain age.
