Kauai's nightlife is low-key to say the least. Party animals may find Kauai a bit quiet for their liking. This is the place where people come to chill out rather than to dance the night away. However there are a few bars and discos on the island. The restaurants and cocktail bars tend to have a happy hour for drinks and there are some great places for enjoying a cocktail while watching the sun going down. Some of the bars and restaurants have live music on certain evenings - generally weekends - but you would have to check what is on as it can change. Another option for evening entertainment would be to attend a luau. These are held at various resorts and hotels and are a great way of experiencing true Hawaiian hospitality.

North Island Nightlife

"The Happy Talk Lounge" (tel: 1 808 826 6522) at the Hanalei Bay Resort is great for music with a jazz evening on Sundays and Hawaiian music on other evenings. It is also a very pleasant place to have an evening drink. "Sushi & Blues", Ching Young Village, Hanalei (tel: 1 808 826 4105) has live music in the evenings including reggae, blues, funk and rock. "Landing Pad" (tel: 1 808 826 9561) at Princeville airport has local bands and karaoke.

Kapaa After Dark

"The Coconut Marketplace" is a center for nightlife in Kapaa. There is a cinema there - the Coconut Marketplace Cinema (tel: 1 808 821 2324) - and bars with music and dancing. "The Lizard Lounge" (tel: 808-821-2205) at 4771 Kuhio Highway in Waipouli town center has music and dancing until 2am.

Lihue Nightlife

"Duke's Barefoot Bar" at the Kauai Marriott Resort has modern and traditional Hawaiian music. There is a happy hour for cocktails and food is served upstairs in the restaurant. "Rob's Good Times Grill" on Rice Street is a lively sports bar with live entertainment and several TVs. The Kukui Grove Cinema (tel: 1 808 245 5055) is just south of Lihue on the Kaumualii Highway.

South Island After Sunset

"Stevenson's Library" at the Hyatt Regency resort is an upmarket location for a drink in elegant surroundings accompanied by live jazz music. This used to be a private library and is decorated in a Victorian style with antique furniture and shelves full of books giving it the feel of a traditional gentleman's club. There are pool tables, an aquarium, a terrace and chess boards. "The Point" (tel: 1 808 742 1661) at the Sheraton Kauai Resort in Poipu has DJs and local bands. "Keoki's Paradise" (tel: 1 808 742 7534) in Poipu Shopping Village has live Hawaiian music and reggae. Hula shows are sometimes held in the shopping center.
