Kilauea, Hawaii's quaintest of villages is located amidst the rolling hills, sheer cliffs and stunning beaches on Kauai's north coast, east of Princeville. One of the most outstanding features of the village is the antique lighthouse which is on a promontory opposite Mokuaeae Island and is the northernmost point of the main islands of Hawaii. It was built in 1913 and was used until the 1970s. It is worth having a look around, although you can't go upstairs. There is a stunning view from the promontory and it is worth a visit for that alone. This part of the headland (including Mokuaeae Island) is a bird sanctuary, Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge, so it would be worth bringing your binoculars. You can do a one-hour guided hike to the top of Crater Hill for stunning views. The refuge is open from 10am to 4pm daily and it only costs a few dollars to get in. To get here, take the Kilauea Road off the Kuhio Highway.
Little stone houses and fruit stands selling exotic, tropical fruit are scattered through the old plantation village. This area is a popular retreat for celebrities, such as Sylvester Stallone, and the very rich. Exotic complexes are to be found scattered around the area. The oldest general store on the island, Kong Lung, is based here and sells a variety of handicrafts, clothing and antiques. The Kilauea Farmer's Market is a small grocery store which sells organic food and gourmet treats and is a favourite daily stop for many locals. Banana Joe's, to the north of Kilauea, is a great place for smoothies and fresh, home-grown fruit. There are plenty of restaurants and eateries in Hawaii's Kilauea, you can get anything form pizzas, pasta and burgers to sandwiches and baked goods.
The village is close to hiking trails, beautiful beaches and cascading waterfalls. Traveling west, you come across the first Kalihiwai Road (there is a second Kalihiwai Road : the two used be joined by bridge which was destroyed by a tsunami in 1957 and has yet to be replaced). Follow this road to Kalihiwai Bay - a picturesque little bay with sandy beach. Local kids practice riding the waves here and it is safe to swim in the summer. Kalihiwai Bay is also a good place to simply relax and enjoy the scenery. The first Kalihiwai Road gives you access to the Secret Beach via a short hike (ten to fifteen minutes) down a rocky path. The Secret Beach's hidden location made it popular for nude sunbathing for a while but police have now caught onto this and hand out tickets to offenders. This beach is not safe for swimming in the winter, but on calm days during the summer is great for swimming and snorkeling. Just off the main highway there are some spectacular falls which are worth visiting while you are in this area.
