Kalaheo, Hawaii's Coffee Highway

Kalaheo is a few miles inland on Kauai's south coast. This attractive plantation town used to be reliant on the sugar industry, but sugar has now been replaced by coffee. The coffee produced here is not as well known as some but lovers of the bean would probably be interested in popping into the Kauai Coffee Visitors' Center on Highway 540 which is also known, not surprisingly, as the Coffee Highway. Another feature of this area is the Kukuiolono Park and Golf Course which is a private golf course and garden founded by Walter McBryde and given to the people of Kauai when he passed away. He is buried in the small, beautiful, Japanese garden located on the course itself. This is a good course for beginners to practice on - it is relatively cheap compared with other courses on the island. The course has nine holes and is not as well-maintained as the other grander courses on the island, but it still has its own charm.

Kalaheo is within easy access of the stunning beaches at Poipu and offers reasonable accommodation at affordable prices. Therefore many people choose to stay here rather than at the more expensive Poipu Resort. Try the Kalaheo Inn (1 888 332 6023) on Papalina Road for a clean, comfortable place to stay. They have a public pay phone, laundry facilities and equipment such as golf clubs and boogie boards for their guests' use. You must book for at least two nights. Guests also have free access to the tennis courts and swimming pool at the Kiahuna Swim and Tennis Club.

There are plenty of restaurants and places to get snacks and drinks in Kalaheo. A good place for breakfast is the Kalaheo Coffee Company and Café (1 888 332 5858) on the highway. They also do baked goods, sandwiches and salads. You can buy packets of coffee here to take away with you. The Kalaheo Steak House (1 888 332 9780) is open in the evenings and serves really good steak and seafood. For great, but pricey, pizza try the Brick Oven Pizza (1 332 8561) just off the highway. Delicious Italian food including lasagna and other pasta dishes are served at the Pomodoro (1 888 332 5945) in the Rainbow Plaza in Kalaheo.

As you head west from Kalaheo going towards Hanapepe, you come to the Hanapepe Valley Lookout just after the fourteen-mile marker. History lovers will be particularly taken with the view over the valley which was the scene of a bloody battle when the King's son initiated a rebellion against the government. Government troops were sent over to quell the rebellion and many lost their lives.
