Condos are self-contained units on purpose-built complexes or resorts that often have shared facilities such as car parking, maid service, laundry facilities, swimming pools, tennis courts and spas to mention just a few. Kauai's condos vary from beautifully-decorated, spacious, luxury accommodation with ocean views to basic units with one or two rooms that serve as an ideal, but simple, base of operation from which to experience the island and all it has to offer. When it comes to buying vacation property, condos tend to be the cheaper option especially if buyers are more interested in a timeshare scheme.
Most condominiums include: a fitted kitchen with cooking facilities and a fridge; cable TV; VCR; music system; ceiling fans; a coffee machine, a lanai (verandah or balcony); iron and ironing board; hair dryer; and bathroom. Some units do have air conditioning but you have to ask - most of the year there is enough wind that a/c is not required. Another factor to consider is whether you would like an ocean view or not. Oceanfront condos cost significantly more and you may only end up getting a partial view of the ocean - although if you can see the Pacific from where you are staying then you only have to contend with a short stroll to the beach.
Self-contained accommodation can be more convenient for families or large groups. Being able to cook meals cuts down on living costs and condo vacation rental rates are cheaper when shared amongst a large group than paying for a hotel.
Different rental agents may manage the units in a complex, so it is worth shopping around as rates and standard of accommodation can vary greatly from agent to agent. There is usually a minimum stay of at least three days and some agencies have a reduced rate for children and for extended stays. Others agencies, however, will not discount their rates at all. It is worth checking a few agents out to find out what they are offering and what services are included in the price. Some agencies may insist on receiving payment for the entire stay in full in advance. Condos near hotels or golf courses may have access to the hotel's facilities or to the golf course for a reduced rate.
