Kama Sutra India - Travel Guide – The Kama Sutra Temples India

Karma Sutra is found in the temple adorned town of Khajaraho. An international tourist destination, Khajaraho is home to a temple complex that in the past was full with 85 temples that were constructed within a hundred years with only twenty-two surviving the years. The temples are clad with sandstone sculptures of many inventive erotic positions.

Although the reason for such sculptures is widely debated, one theory is that it was a cult that believed heaven could be reached through bodily enjoyment.

These Kama Sutra carvings are primarily seen on the outside of the temples as it is said that you must leave behind your sexual desires when entering the temple. Even so, these outside carvings can be quite graphic. Though different to what many expect, these erotic carvings aren’t everywhere, and can take a good eye to spot them amongst the carvings of gods, goddesses, animals and warriors. In fact, some estimates only about 10% of the sculptures are of erotic nature.

James McConnachie described the Khajuraho sculptures as “twisting, broad-hipped and high breasted nymphs” that “run riot across the surface of the stone, putting on make-up, washing their hair, playing games, dancing, and endlessly knotting and unknotting their girdles”.

To visit the Kama Sutra carvings, you must first travel to Khajuraho in Madhya Pradesh. You can do this by flying into Khajuraho’s airport, by train or bus from other cities.

The Kama Sutra carvings are suggested to be some of the best art in the world so come prepared to be amazed at their sheer brilliance. Also remember that when exploring the vast complex, walk with your right shoulder facing the buildings as this is considered divine.
