Implementation of Google Co-op context search on the site with background labels - www.indigoguide.com

Google recently launched Co-op and we made the decision to implement this new technology onto IndigoGuide.com, a travel site of over 2000 pages - see the individual sitemaps for each section of the site: Cyprus - Costa Rica - Dubai - France - Greece - Hawaii - Ibiza - Italy - Majorca - Malta - Mexico - Portugal - Spain - Thailand - Turkey - Safaris - Golf Holidays - Cruises - Orlando Florida - Kilimanjaro - Grand Canyon - Alaska - Las Vegas - A to M - N to Z - Travel Insurance - Airport Parking - Airport Hotels - Ferries - Spain Vacation Rentals - Timeshares

There are 2 parts to Co-op, subscribed links and topics. This document concentrates on topics where Co-op creates a search context box which can easily be added to one's website. IMPORTANT NOTE - for the context search to work from the website, it is NOT a requirement for the user to subscribe to one's profile - EG the profile to subscribe to, for this site can be found here.

The reason for implementing Co-op on this site is that it allows us to provide improved search results for the searches completed from these context boxes, including deleting entirely, non relevant results.

Step one was to decide on the most relevant topics the context search should include related to the main site, in the end we decided to create a total of 12 context searches, see below:

Example on the site - Golfing in France
Example on the site - Greece
Example on the site - Roses in Spain
Example on the site - Cruises - Mexico
Example on the site - Sierra Nevada in Spain
Example on the site - Safaris in Zambia
Example on the site - Reykjavik in Iceland
Example on the site - Newcastle Ferry Routes
Example on the site - Stansted Airport
Example on the site - Alaska
Example on the site - Florida Timeshares
Example on the site - Property in France

Initially we needed to decide the ideal "user refinements" for each topic for example for countries we decided them to be as follows:

In this instance we have included refinements for vacations, real estate, accommodation, travel, cruises, immigration, public transport, geography, history, culture, cuisine, employment, climate, maps, facts and figures, regions, visas, consulates, health and education. We believe that this covers the most important aspects on a country should a user be searching specifically on a single country search prase.

These refinements appear only when the search is completed from the Co-op search box located on the site, even when the user is not subscribed to this site's profile. However should the user be subscribed (subscribe here) and completes a search that matches the "triggers" we have included with this context, these refinements will appear.

The triggers for these refinements on this context include the following: afghanistan, albania, algeria, angola, argentina, armenia, australia, austria, azerbaijan, bahamas, bahrain, barbados, belarus, belgium, belize, benin, bermuda, bhutan, bolivia, herzegovina, botswana, brazil, cambodia, cameroon, canada, cape verde, chad, chile, china, colombia, comoros, Costa rica, croatia, cyprus, czech republic, denmark, djibouti, dominica, dominican republic, ecuador, egypt, el salvador, equatorial guinea, eritrea, estonia, fiji, finland, France, french polynesia, gabon, gambia, georgia, germany, ghana, greece, grenada, guatemala, guinea, guyana, hati, hondurus, hong kong, hungary, iceland, india, indonesia, iran, ireland, israel, italy, jamaica, japan, jordan, kazakhstan, kenya, kiribati, korea, kuwait, latvia, lebanon, lesotho, liberia, libya, lithuania, luxembourg, macao, macedonia, madagascar, malawi, malaysia, maldives, mali, malta, marshall slands, mauritania, mauritius, mexico, moldova, mongolia, morocco, mozambique, namibia, nepal, netherlands, holland, new caledonia, new zealand, nicaraqua, niger, nigeria, norway, oman, pakistan, panama, papua new guinea, paraguay, peru, philippines, poland, portugal, puerto rico, romania, russia, rwanda, samoa, saudi arabia, senegal, serbia, seychelles, sierra leone, singapore, slovak republic, slovenia, solomon islands, somalia, south africa, spain, sri lanka, st lucia, sudan, suriname, swaziland, sweden, switzerland, syria, tajikistan, tanzania, thailand, togo, tonga, trinidad, tobago, tunisia, turkey, turkmenistan, uganda, ukraine, uae, uk, england, scotland, wales, northern ireland, united kingdom, great britain, usa, uk, united states, uruguay, uzbekistan, venezuela, vietnam, virgin islands, yemen, zambia and zimbabwe.

You may be wondering why this is of benefit for the user? Simply put - when the user clicks the link "real estate" on the refinements in the above example the search that takes place to Google is controlled by the context that is in place - EG in this instance we have changed the refinement to complete this search, in this example, to "Greece property OR estate agents OR real estate" where the only input from the user has been the phrase "Greece".

Further to this, one has the ability to label sites should they be relevant to this topic (real_estate). Further still Co-op has the ability to allow one to add background labels where it is possible to delete specific URL's completely from the searches completed via the refinements.

There is already useful documentation available on how to label and complete context files on Co-op's documantation. In this example it also includes the use of background labels to delete and promote search results.
