Eating out in Ibiza is one of the island's great experiences, even though the food is not as inventive or exciting as that of other international cuisines. An evening meal in a restaurant in Ibiza should start with a jug of sangria as an aperitif. Most restaurants will automatically bring you bread, olives and aioli - a dip made with mayonnaise and garlic - when you sit down. A typical starter would be either gazpacho - a summer vegetable soup served cold - or gambas a la planxa, prawns fried in olive oil and garlic. Naturally for any small island, most main courses involve fish prepared in a variety of ways.

Restaurants in Ibiza are varied to reflect the diversity of the island's visitors. An absolute must is at least one meal within the walls of Ibiza Town's Dalt Vila. Many of the Old Town's restaurants are in or around the Placa de Vila, the romantic cobble-stone square, and are worth a visit for the stunning location alone. These include La Plaza (971 307 617), a relatively expensive restaurant specialising in Mediterranean cuisine, and Sa Torreta (971 300 411), which is more pricey but provides both fine French-Mediterranean food and a delightfully spacious pavement seating area.

The La Marina area of Ibiza Town is where the majority of the city's tourist restaurants are located, but this is not to say that there aren't a few gems among them. Some of the best restaurants here are La Brasa (Carrer Pere Sala 3; 971 301 202), which boasts an exotic terrace and an unpretentious, reasonably priced menu of fish and meat, and El Pirata (Carrer Garijo 10b; 971 192 630), a fairly cheap place specialising in home-made pizza that can be eaten either on the terrace or taken away.

The more exclusive Marina Botafoc area of Ibiza Town is home to a number of vastly expensive restaurants serving extremely delicious food. One worth a mention is Madrigal (971 311 107), in the middle of the portside restaurant strip, where you can choose between a simple, romantic table outside or a sumptuous table inside, at which you sit on a red sofa and are surrounded by fine art.

For fine, traditional food and an unbeatable location, head for Ses Eufabies (971 806 328) on the beach at Cala Tarida. This unassuming-looking place has spectacular sunset views over the sea and is probably the best restaurant in Ibiza. The food - mainly fish dishes - is exquisite and the prices very reasonable.

As might be expected, San Antonio has a wealth of British-owned restaurants serving fried breakfasts and roast dinners. The best known amongst these is Soleil (Carrer d'Ignasi Riquer).
