Ibiza Hotels - a guide to the best places to stay

On Ibiza, hotels are springing up all over the place. There are now plenty of hotels for every kind of holiday, both in the main towns of Ibiza and out along the coastline. Ibiza's hotels get almost totally booked up during the high season, so it is advisable to book well in advance for a room at one of the better 4 or 5 star hotels. Indeed, the entire summer season, from May until September, can be pretty packed, and many hotels close for the winter months, so booking ahead at any time is recommended.

Ibiza is a relatively expensive island, and prices are rising all the time, so high-season tourists should expect to be charged at least 150 euros per night for a double room at a decent hotel. Out of season the prices are considerably lower.

Some of Ibiza's best hotels are located in Ibiza Old Town (Dalt Vila). These include El Corsario (Carrer Poniente 5; 971 301 248), said to have been popular with Picasso and Dali, and which boasts its own restaurant and stunning views over Ibiza Town's harbour. La Torre del Canonigo (Carrer Major 8; 971 303 884) is another of the Old Town's spectacular hotels, and is located right next to the cathedral. It's a bit of a walk to get down into the town (not to mention back up), but it's worth it for the hotel's facilities: sauna, swimming pool, cable and DVD, air conditioning, kitchen, and a view over the whitewashed town or the beautiful harbour.

Hotels in San Antonio tend to be less extravagant than those in Ibiza Town, although one particular luxury hotel, Pike's (just east of San Antonio ; 971 342 222), is a firm favourite with the rich and famous. The hotel has excellent facilities, including a restaurant, gym, tennis courts, pool and sun terrace, and was the setting for Wham!'s Club Tropicana video.

Santa Agnes in the north-west has a couple of Ibiza's best hotels, among them Es Pujolet (just north-east of Santa Agnes; 971 805 170), a former farmhouse that has been converted into a series of luxurious rooms with all mod cons and a pool, and Es Cucons (just south of Santa Agnes; 971 805 501), another beautifully converted farmhouse in a rural setting, with a pool and restaurant.

For something totally serene and in a stunning location, head for Club Calador on Cala Carbo (971 80 84 24), a family-run rural hotel refurbished in 2004. With a palm garden, pool and tennis court, and spectacular views over Es Vedra, the modern apartment rooms come at very reasonable prices indeed.
