Guide to Vacations in Maui: The Best of the Best

Probably one of the most well-known attractions is the Haleakala National Park located on the central part of the island. The park is centered around the dormant Haleakala volcano which last blew its top at the end of the 19 th Century. It now does nothing more except cast a warm shadow over the rest of the island and provide a superior lookout point. The sunrises draw people from all over, and are one of Maui's most breathtaking sights. Once the sun is set high in the sky you might want to explore some of the park's beautiful trails and try catch sight of the endangered Silversword plant and the goose-like nene.

Seven Sacred Pools is another firm favorite amongst visitors to the island and is also found in the arms of the Haleakala Park. Close to the town of Hana, the pools are fed by Pipiwai stream and feature a series of waterfalls that flow down from one plunge pool to the next. This is a great place for a picnic, and the pools provide hours of entertainment. The area is also filled with a number of hiking trails.

All Maui vacations are not complete without a spot of whale watching. Granted this activity is not unique to the island of Maui, however, it is the place where holidaymakers will experience the best sightings! The Auau Channel and the island's west coast guarantee a truly rich experience. The Pacific Whale Foundation offers the best expeditions, including an on hand expert who will be able to answer any questions. If you are determined to stay "land-bound" then the best vantage spot would be McGFregor Point.

The cloud covered Iao Valley was the stage for one of Hawaii's most significant battles, which was spurred on by King Kamehameha I pursuit to unite the all the islands under one rule. This lush, rich valley is also home to the impressive Iao Needle, which is believed to be the manhood of the Hawaiian god of the ocean. Hikes, trails, waterfalls and tropical plants make this one of Maui's most inviting attractions.

Our last recommendation is to visit the half sunken crater of Molokini. Molokini is home to a rich source of marine life, this combined with the underwater volcanic formations make it a snorkeling paradise. A number of companies run snorkel trips to the island which set off from several of the west coast harbors.
