As one of the least visited of the Dodecanese Islands Tilos has a limited range and amount of holiday accommodation. There are no swanky resort hotels and conference centres here but there are generally enough rooms and studios to go around even in high season.

If you arrive without a reservation pop along to the information kiosk on the harbour which opens when the ferries dock. Staff there will be able to show you photos and prices of hotel rooms and self-catering studios.

Most accommodation is in the port town of Livadia and consists of cheap and cheerful domatia and self-catering studios. The Paraskevi Rooms are among the best places to stay on the waterfront - nothing lavish but these reasonably studios rooms are well furnished and have their own kitchens.

The rather more upmarket Panorama Studios are located in a peaceful spot on the hillside overlooking Livadia Bay. The studios benefit from lovely sea-view terraces draped with vines, bougainvillea and geraniums. The studios, like many on the island, are closed from October to March.

The port's relatively small selection of hotels includes the well-equipped Hotel Irini, 100 metres from the beach and seafront tavernas. The hotel has its own pool and is set in beautiful gardens bursting with palm trees, hibiscus flowers, roses and banana trees. The bedrooms offer all mod cons including ceiling fans (some have air conditioning), hair dryers and private balconies. Breakfast is served on one of the outdoor garden terraces.

Hotel Eleni, half way along the beach road, is a friendly and tastefully furnished hotel offering reasonably priced double rooms with a phone and fridge. But you'll need to book in advance because rooms tend to get snapped up by package holidaymakers.

The classiest place to bed down for the night is the B-category Hotel Tilos Mare, 200 metres from the beach and 300 metres from the port. The hotel is a classy apartment complex, built in traditional Dodecanese style and offering an excellent range of sports and leisure facilities including a restaurant, bar, swimming pool, table tennis and water sports. All 41 units have an en-suite bathroom, television, phone and kitchenette.

There's a small selection of domatia in the island's capital, Megalo Horio, eight kilometres north west of Livadia. Elefantakia Studios on the main street are among the best of the bunch and next-door Miliou Rooms and Apartments are also good value for money.

You can stay at the island's most popular beach in the Eristos Beach Hotel, right on the seafront 2.5 kilometres south of Megalo Horio. The hotel has bright, airy studios with kitchenettes and sleeping for up to four people. Or there's the Tropicana Taverna which has rooms to let, set among the orchards on the road leading down from Megalo Horio to Eristos Beach.
