There's plenty of holiday accommodation to be found in the two main towns on Thassos and all the seaside villages around the coastline have hotels and rooms to rent. But be aware that many places shut down from October to May and the big hotels tend to get block booked months in advance by the tour operators.
If you're travelling on a tight budget and you arrive on the island without a reservation in high season your best bet is to seek out one of the many cheap and cheerful domatia to be found in the capital, Limenas. The streets behind the main thoroughfare, 18 Octovriou, are full of rooms to rent signs. Or head out to one of the six camp sites dotted around the coast.
One of the best value-for-money hotels in the capital is the Athanassia which offers comfortable and affordable accommodation in a quiet spot along the lane inland from behind the Xenia Hotel. Rooms and hotels in the town centre tend to be noisy so you might want to try the tranquil and reasonably priced Hotel Tarsanas, on the beach one kilometre west of town, which has an excellent restaurant serving the best seafood on the island.
If you're not counting your Euros, book into the upmarket Amfipolis Hotel right in the centre of town on 18 Octovriou. This elegant A-category hotel is housed in a former tobacco factory and offers sumptuous furnishings along with a swimming pool, good restaurant and two bars.
If you want an action-packed holiday or you're travelling with children one of the best places to stay on Thassos is at the Makryammos holiday resort a couple of kilometres south east of Limenas. The complex consists of 198 bungalows and 10 luxurious waterfront suites set amid trees and beautifully landscaped gardens overlooking paradisaical Makryammos Bay. All manner of sports and recreation activities are on offer including workshops in everything from learning the Greek language and cookery to shiatsu and pilates body control. Children are extremely well catered for with their own pool, playground, small zoo and kids' club.
There are hotels and rooms to rent in the picturesque hillside village of Panagia and masses of accommodation flanking the island's most popular beach of Khryssi Ammoudia, five kilometres below the village. Golden Beach Camping, right in the centre of the beach near the water's edge, is the only camp site on the east coast and is well equipped with various facilities including a minimarket.
There are other camp sites at Pefakari, on the south coast near Limenaria, and at the beaches of Skala Prinos and Skala Sotira in the north west corner of the island. The Nysteri Bay camp site, 2.5 kilometres west of the capital, is a small and basic site with hard ground but it's handy if you want to be near the nightlife of Limenas.
The island's most exclusive accommodation is provided by the Alexandra Beach Resort, near Potos on the south coast. This luxurious beachside hotel has every conceivable facility including shops, a gym, outdoor pool, a packed kids' programme and all kinds of recreational activities.
