Spetses offers a vibrant nightlife especially during the summer weekends when the bars, restaurants and clubs are packed with Athenian visitors. Spetses Town is the liveliest night spot on the island - referred to by some as the St Tropez of the Greek islands with its first class restaurants and pricey cocktail bars frequented by visiting tycoons and yachties.
Package holiday tour groups have brought an international flavour to many of the local tavernas with an accompanying decline in standards in some cases. But it's still possible to find reasonably priced, traditional eateries serving good quality Greek fare especially if you stay away from the waterfront. The Greeks tend to eat late at night by north European standards so if you want to be sure of a table at one of the most popular haunts in town, aim to bag a seat before 9pm.
One of the best low-budget places where you can be sure of freshly prepared, tasty Greek dishes is Taverna O Lazaros, about half a kilometre inland and uphill from Dapia in the Kastelli district. It's a favourite with the locals (always a good sign) who come here for delicious homemade taramasolata, grilled meat dishes and local specialties such as baby goat in lemon sauce. The walls are decorated with family photos and lined with barrels of locally produced retsina.

The best place in town for fresh fish is Patralis, near the Spetses Hotel on the road west out to Ligoneri. Take a seat on the waterside veranda and salivate over the freshest seafood dishes prepared from fish landed by the restaurant's own boat. Or try Bouboulina's ouzeri for less pricey, fresh fish snacks (opposite the town's fish market).
After wining and dining, take your pick of the many music bars, discos and bouzouki joints to be found in Dapia, the Old Harbour and Kounoupitsa on the west side of town.
Socrates, in the middle of Dapia, is one of the most popular bars (good for cheap cocktails during Happy Hour) or there's the nearby, rather more upmarket Anchor bar. A chic set gathers at Bracera music bar alongside the yachting marina and bright young things down over-priced drinks at Mama's at Agia Mama's Beach.
Bar Spetsa, a short distance beyond Plateia Agia Mama's, is a popular spot for fans of 60s and 70s music.
When it comes to dancing the night away, take your pick of techno, pop or Greek music at various clubs in Kounoupitsa, Dapia and the Old Harbour. Figaro is the biggest and best-known, boasting a seaside terrace and dancing till dawn on weekend nights. The music is international until midnight when the DJs tend to switch to Greek hits.
If you fancy a spot of Greek dancing head for Fox where you're likely to be dragged onto the dance floor for an impromptu lesson if you look too much like a non-Greek tourist.
