Accommodation on Spetses is relatively expensive as the island is a popular holiday destination for wealthy Athenian weekenders, visiting VIPs and tycoons. There are plenty of hotels geared to package holidaymakers but if you arrive on spec during the summer months you may struggle to find a reasonably priced, decent hotel for the night especially at weekends.
Domatia owners sometimes meet the ferries if they have spare rooms to let or you might try one of the travel agencies in the main harbour of Dapia rather than trudging the streets in search of a bed. The town sprawls four kilometres along the island's north east coastline so hotel-hunting on foot can be an arduous task in high season.
Best bets in the low-budget range include the Star Hotel in Plateia Dapia which offers clean and comfortable en-suite rooms, all with private balconies. The front rooms overlook the harbour and the hotel benefits from being in a traffic-free zone because of the pebble mosaic pavement outside. A cheaper option is the Faros Hotel which shares the bustling central square with various bars, cafes and tavernas.
You'll find plenty of mid-range C-class hotels along the waterfront but if your mood and budget lead you to a greater degree of self-indulgence, soak yourself in old-world grandeur at the imposing Hotel Possidonian in Dapia. The hotel was built in 1911 and given a major facelift in the 1990s. Modern comforts blend with Edwardian elegance at this landmark hotel where two grand pianos grace the lobby and tall windows give wonderful views of the harbour.
More old world charm can be found at the beautifully preserved Economou Mansion, an imposing waterfront building ten minutes walk from the town centre. This small but select hotel was built in 1851 as the home of a wealthy sea captain and it retains much of its 19th century atmosphere with lavender scented chests, lace curtains and pebbled courtyards surrounded by stone walls. There are just six guest rooms, all well equipped with air conditioning, hair dryer, TV and minibar, and two luxurious suites which are often snapped up by honeymoon couples. The building is listed as a national treasure and contains many valuable antiques (hence the ban on under-16s).
The most luxurious modern hotel in town is the Nissia, built in the 1990s on the waterfront at Kounoupitsa, at the western end of the harbour. The hotel consists of 31 self-catering units including two presidential suites located in the towers of this beautifully restored former factory building. The complex boasts a large swimming pool, restaurant, business and conference facilities.
Fans of English novelist John Fowles might want to contact Pine Island Tours in Dapia to check out the availability of Villa Yasemia on the west coast of the island. The house was used as the setting for Fowles' most famous novel, The Magus, and is now let as holiday accommodation.
