The best way to explore Skopelos is to hire a scooter, mountain bike or 4x4 vehicle to take you down the many jeep tracks and rough trails which criss-cross the interior. You'll find numerous rental outlets in Skopelos Town, most of them at the far eastern end of the waterfront. Local travel agencies can also arrange car or motorbike hire for you.

The island's main paved road leads from Skopelos Town down towards the south coast beaches then skirts up the west coast ending at Glossa at the northern end of the island. Several buses a day link Skopelos Town and Glossa in high season, stopping at the paths which lead down to the various beaches and villages along the way. But with your own set of wheels you'll have the freedom to discover the island's many places of interest at your own pace.

To visit the cluster of monasteries in the hills above Skopelos Town, take the road leading north east out of the town towards Moni Evangelistrias. At the end of the road you'll find three monasteries within easy reach of each other - Evangelistrias, which is the largest monastery on the island, Moni Prodromou which is the most remote and beautiful of the trio and 16th century Metamorfosis which is one of the oldest monasteries on Skopelos. All three are open to the public but be sure to dress modestly and avoid visiting during the afternoon siesta.

Drive four kilometres south of Skopelos Town to the south coast resort of Stafylos where a tomb containing priceless gold treasures, including a 15th century BC golden sword, was unearthed in the 1930s. The tomb is believed to be that of Minoan ruler Staphylos who according to mythology was the son of Dionysos, the god of wine. The treasures are now housed in the mainland museum of Volos.

From here the road leads west to the small port of Agnontas where islanders come to dine at the fish tavernas scattered around the bay. This small fishing village-cum-resort is named after a local hero who brought home a gold medal from the 569 BC Olympic Games.

The west coast road takes you past the popular beach resorts of Panormos and Milia and leads on to the lovely hilltop town of Glossa which is one of the most picturesque settlements in the Greek islands. There are plenty of rooms to let here so you might be tempted to stay overnight in this delightfully unspoilt, very Greek village where Turkish influences and the remains of Venetian towers and houses are evident among the whitewashed homes clustered together on a steep hillside.

To the west of Skopelos Town several rough tracks wind through the olive and plum groves towards 680-metre Mount Dhelfi, the island's highest peak. If you've hired a vehicle which can cope with these inviting trails you'll be able to delve deep into the densely forested countryside which is speckled with traditional stone farm houses (called "kalivi"). If you come across these houses you'll notice they all have outdoor ovens, once used to bake fresh plums when the island had a thriving prune industry.
