If you're an all night party animal don't choose Samothraki as your Greek island holiday destination. Except for the annual Samothraki Dance Festival which takes place at the end of August, the island's nightlife is low-key - a leisurely meal and a night cap or two before bed is about as lively as its gets here.
What little late night action there is takes place in the port town of Kamariotissa where a string of waterfront "barakia" (small bars) buzz with locals and visitors in July and August. Some have music but it's essentially laid-back entertainment so you'll be disappointed if you're a fan of foam parties and dance-till-you-drop discos. If that's your scene you'll be better off on party islands like Mykonos, Rhodes or Corfu.
But you can be sure of a decent meal in the island's traditional tavernas, especially if you're a sucker for seafood.
Kamariotissa's waterfront is awash with restaurants specialising in fresh fish dishes. In most cases you walk in and point at your preferred fish or cut of meat. One of the best value for money fish tavernas is I Synatisi, on the waterfront near Niki Tours. The restaurant serves up delicious seafood mezedes and simple but beautifully fresh grilled fish main courses. It's also a perfect place to watch the sun go down. Limanaki, at the southern end of the waterfront, is another good option for fish which is served with excellent Limniot wine from the barrel. If you're not a fish fan there are plenty of cheap souvlaki and gyros joints in town or try the good quality Klimitaria Taverna at the eastern end of the waterfront.
Popular after-dinner drinking spots include Diva music bar on the waterfront and Café Aktaion where you can quaff a reasonably-priced cocktail or two before calling it a night.
If you have your own transport you might want to drive up to the delightful hillside capital, Hora, for dinner because this is the place to enjoy some of the tastiest food on the island. To Kastro taverna on the central square offers a mouthwatering menu along with wonderful views of the ruined castle and sea beyond.
Wherever you choose to dine, try to sample the island's landmark meal of roast kid (the hillsides of Samothraki are home to thousands of semi-wild goats and the locals simply love to make a meal of them).
At the end of August sleepy Samothraki suddenly takes centre stage as one of the world's leading trance scene venues, attracting thousands of electro music fans from all corners of the globe. The week-long Electronic Music and Dance Festival is staged on the seafront near the north coast municipal camp sites. The event attracts top name DJs and live acts but its future may be in jeopardy since drugs and other problems sparked a series of raids by the local police.
