The coastline of Samos is peppered with many good beaches from busy sandy stretches packed with tourists in high season to enchanting, unspoilt coves where your only company in the water might be the endangered Mediterranean Monk Seal. Buses run from the capital Vathy to all the most popular beaches along the north and south coasts. But if it's sun, sea and solitude you're after you'll need to strike out on foot or hire a boat.

The closest beach to Vathy is Gagou, two kilometres north of the pier. If you have your own transport you can follow the narrow coastal road from the capital to Agia Paraskevi at the north eastern tip of the island where there's good swimming but no facilities except a snack bar with haphazard opening hours.

Heading south east out of the capital, the road leads to the striking bay of Kerveli at the eastern end of the island. The Sea and Dolphins taverna by the water serves mouthwatering mezedes and the ouzo-like local firewater called "souma". If you ignore the Kerveli turning the road leads out to the far south east tip of Samos where there's a small beach and a good but relatively pricey taverna.

The south coast beach of Psili Ammos is gently shelving and popular with families but it gets extremely crowded in high season because of its proximity to Vathy and Pythagorio. Nearby Mikali is a one-kilometre stretch of sand and gravel with magnificent views of Turkey, two kilometres across the water.

There's a beach stretching for several kilometres west of Pythagorio, starting at the castle and leading all the way to Potokaki near the airport. Or you might want to take advantage of the daily boat excursions to the island of Samiopoula which has two good beaches.

The middle section of the south coast is inaccessible by road but there are regular round-the-island boat cruises which enable you to see beautiful, unspoilt stretches of coastline.

If you hire a jeep or heavyweight motorbike you'll be able to negotiate the dirt track down to the scenic cove of Tsopela at the mouth of a gorge (don't even think about trying with a scooter).

The fastest growing beach resort on the south coast is Votsalakia, dominated by 1,437-metre Mount Kerkis. Naturists should head for either Ballos, a long pebble bay east of Votsalaki, or to Psili Ammos (not to be confused with the beach of the same name at the other end of the south coast).

The stunningly beautiful beaches of Megalo Seitani and Micro Seitani in the north western corner of the island the island can only be reached on foot or by boat. It's worth making the effort, especially to see Megalo Seitani which is one of the loveliest beaches in the Aegean - a gorgeous stretch of sand backed by an imposing gorge and lapped by the crystal clear waters of a marine reserve inhabited by Mediterranean Monk Seals.

The north coast of the island is lined with sand and pebble beaches many of which are buffeted by the meltemi north wind, making them popular among windsurfers.
