Poros has a lively nightlife in the summer months especially in August and at the weekends when Athenians come here in droves to escape the searing heat and pollution of their smog-filled capital. The main town has some excellent, reasonably priced restaurants and the quayside is awash with cafes, bars and creperies overlooking the Peloponnesian port of Galatas.
Pretty young females beware - you're likely to find yourselves pursued by red-blooded cadets from the town's Naval Academy if you join the evening " volta " when Greeks stroll through the streets with no particular aim or destination in mind.
There are plenty of fast-food gyros and souvlaki joints but if you'd rather take your time over a more stylish dinner try the top quality Caravella portside taverna which serves up sumptuous fresh fish dishes and home-grown organic vegetables.
Be aware that even some of the classier restaurants don't take credit cards so make sure you have enough cash to cover the bill. The Alpha Bank in the plateia to the right before the port police has a 24-hour ATM.
Committed carnivores will love Dimitris' Restaurant at the top of the town near Agios Georgios Cathedral. The owner is a butcher who will guarantee your juicy steak is the finest and freshest in town. You'll probably find one or more of his eight children waiting at the tables. Book in advance because this one of the most popular places in Poros.
If you can't face another menu of mezedes and moussaka, book a table at the Flying Dutchman, just off Plateia Karamanos, for innovative offerings including Indonesian and Chinese creations. Or pop over to Galatas where the Galatea Italian restaurant produces good quality pizzas and pasta dishes. Bobby's Taverna in Galatas, across from the car ferry dock, is famed for producing some of the finest fresh fish around.
Later in the evening you might want to take in a film at open-air Cinema Diana, to the left of Lela Tours. Foreign films are usually shown in their original language at this summer cinema which has two screenings nightly.
The Korali club is the place for late night dancing or head out to popular Sirocco, one kilometre from the town centre at the southern tip of Sferia. Both clubs play a mixture of Greek and international chart music. Illusions in the Askeli resort area of Kalavria is another favourite dance spot on hot summer nights.
Many of the hotels in the package holiday resorts of Kalavria provide in-house entertainment including Greek nights, barbecues, live music and discos. Some also have kids' clubs so you can relax over an early evening drink while someone else wears out your youngsters before bed.
If you're visiting in mid-June you can take a boat over to Galatas for the annual Flower Festival which sees the port town transformed into a riot of colour with masses of elaborate floral displays, street parades and marching bands.
