You won't find a great deal of dirt cheap accommodation on Poros simply because of the large number of wealthy Athenians descending on the island at weekends and throughout the summer months. There are no camp sites or youth hostels for budget conscious backpackers but if you scout around in Poros Town you should be able to find a clean, comfortable and reasonably priced room. If you turn up in high season without a reservation you may have to take potluck with one of the domatia owners who meet the incoming ferries.
There are plenty of domatia in the streets behind the town's waterfront and there are several travel agencies that can help you find a room. There's a small choice of hotels in town but most of the big hotels and holiday apartment complexes are scattered along the south coast beach resorts of Kalavria (the bigger island connected to Sferia and Poros Town by a road bridge over the canal).
One of the best value for money places in town is Villa Tryfon, just off Plateia Georgiou at the top of the hill. All bedrooms have private kitchens and bathroom and there are superb views over the harbour and Kalavria.
For old world charm coupled with essential modern comforts try Hotel Dionyssos, a beautifully restored mansion house in Papadopoulou near the car ferry dock. All 13 rooms are comfortably furnished and have air conditioning and televisions.
You'll find a wider choice of hotels if you take the five-minute boat ride over to the Peloponnesian port of Galatas. You'll pay less here for accommodation of a Symilar standard as in Poros Town. The Manos Pension offers homely rooms at a reasonable price (turn left as you get off the boat and it's just past the playing fields). The friendly owner and his wife are a mine of useful local knowledge and may even invite you to the family farm for some Greek food and dancing.
The nearest official camp site is Camping Kyragelo about 500 metres from the centre of Galatas on the road leading inland from the water taxi dock.
Kalavria is awash with hotels, self-catering studios and apartments but most are block booked by the tour operators so book well in advance if you want a room near any of the most popular beach resorts.
Askeli, on the south coast road to the Zoodohou Pigis Monastery, has the biggest selection of classy hotels and apartment complexes including the luxurious beachside Alexopoulos Village Villas complex which offers air-conditioned rooms with all mod cons (kitchenette, hair dryers, safe deposit box, TV and mini bar) along with a large outdoor pool, fitness centre and various watersports.
The A-category Saga Studios complex at Kanali, west of Askeli Beach consists of 26 well-equipped studios with balconies and sea views. Facilities include a pool (served by a bar and lifeguard), jacuzzi, on-site jewellers and top quality restaurant. The management organises various activities including barbecues and Greek nights.
