Don't come to Patmos expecting the hottest nightlife in the Dodecanese - if you're after all-night partying you'll be better off in Rhodes or Kos. But the island offers some delectable dining experiences and a handful of late night music bars and dance clubs.
The main port of Skala has plenty of glitzy waterfront cafes and bars catering for the cruise ship clientele and yachties who swarm ashore here in the summer months. You'll finds lots of reasonably priced gyros and souvlaki eateries along with more upmarket choices including the excellent seafood ouzeri To Hiliomodhi at the start of the road up to Hora. The generous plate of appetisers served here is good value for money and some of the seafood dishes are exotic enough to tempt the most adventurous palates (the live limpets are guaranteed to tickle your taste buds!).
Taverna Pandelis, one street back from the harbourfront, is a perennially popular dining spot serving up good quality, home made Greek standards and is open throughout the year unlike many of its neighbours.
If you've had your fill of tzatziki and stifado, try classy Restaurant Giagia for spicy Indonesian dishes but expect to pay higher prices than in the local tavernas.
Art Café is one of the trendiest evening meeting spots with a canopied roof terrace and a busy downstairs bar (you get to it via the path from the main plateia to the right of the post office). Young locals gather to play cards and watch the world go by at Café Arion on the waterfront and chic Café Aman, below the Church of Agia Paraskevi, is another favourite place to relax over a sundowner.
The popular indoor dance club Consolato, near Café Aman, opens its doors at 11pm and is packed with locals and tourists till the small hours in high season. The Lampsi Club is another well-frequented late night dance venue.
The hilltop capital Hora offers a choice of bars and restaurants, some of which afford wonderful views to Skala and neighbouring islands as the sun goes down. Café 1673 is the place for dancing or if you want an evening out with a more Greek flavour head for Aloni Restaurant which offers traditional music and dancing in local costumes on summer nights.
The island's coastline is peppered with tavernas and a handful of excellent waterfront restaurants with superb locations and food to match. One of the best evening dining spots is Benetos at Sapsila, three kilometres south of Skala. A mouthwatering selection of innovative dishes prepared from the freshest local ingredients is served up in this lovely Tuscan Villa by the water's edge. The restaurant was named the best on the island and one of the top 30 in the whole of Greece by the Greek Alpha Guide in 2000. There are only 12 tables so make sure you book in advance.
