Once you've done the obligatory visits to the sacred grotto and magnificent monastery of St John you'll probably want to make a beeline for the island's beaches which are its other main tourist attraction. Take your pick of bustling, family-friendly seaside resorts or head for the more serene, secluded coves which pepper the more remote corners of the island.
The sandy town beach in Skala tends to get crowded so if you're planning a full day of sun soaking and swimming you'll be better off taking a bus or water taxi to the more appealing beaches which lie to the north and south of the port along the east coat. Much of the west coast is rocky, inaccessible and wind battered.
The closest beach to the port is Meloi, two kilometres north east of Skala, where you'll find a pleasant tree-lined stretch of sand and some good spots for snorkelling. The excellent, well-equipped Stefanos Camp Site is right by the beach (the site's minibus meets most boats as they arrive at Skala).
Another two kilometres north along the coast you arrive at Agriolivadho Bay with its relatively quiet beach - sandy in the middle and served by a couple of seasonal tavernas. Tourist facilities are limited here but there are canoes for rent.
The much busier resort of Kambos lies north east of Agriolivadho 600 metres downhill from Kambos village. The shingle beach is good for families with its calm, shallow waters, plenty of tree shade and lively seaside scene. Numerous hotels line the beach and regular buses from Skala bring day trippers here in droves. You can windsurf, sail, paraglide or rent a canoe. Or just relax in the beachside taverna which serves up the best lobster on the island.
Kambos is the end of the bus route but you can hike or bike it from here to more secluded coves further along the bay and to the north of the island. Pebbly Vagia Beach, an easy walk east of Kambos, is rocky and peaceful (a world apart from its busy neighbour). Nearby Liyinou is a popular nudist haunt or head for the sand and gravel beach of Livadhi tou Geranou which has tamarisk trees, a good taverna and wonderful views of the islets a short way offshore.
You can reach the northern beach of Lambi by walking from Kambos through the village of Christos or take a taxi or excursion boat from Skala. This is a beautiful beach of multi-coloured pebbles and has one of the finest restaurants on the island - Taverna Leonida, famous for its superb saganaki (flaming cheese concoctions) and fresh fish dishes prepared from the day's catch. Steer clear of this beach on days when the violent meltemi wind is blowing from the north.
Just three kilometres south of Skala you'll find a quiet beach at Sapsila Bay or if you want a livelier scene head further south to the magnificent bay of Grikou which has the island's most developed seaside resort, catering for the package holiday market.
Psili Ammos, in the south west corner of Patmos, is a beautiful cove of pure sand with tamarisk trees, sweeping dunes.and a swathe of naked flesh at the far south end where naturists gather. You can catch a caique (water taxi) from Skala or if you want to steal a march on your fellow day trippers, take an early morning cab as far as Diakofti then hike 30 minutes to the beach.
