Parikia is the most frantic place on the island especially during the height of the summer when island-hopping visitors swarm all over the port waiting for their next ferry connection. The bulk of the accommodation is in three areas - in the old town, along the harbourside and at Livadia beach to the north of the port. You'll be met by a gaggle of domatia owners when you disembark from the ferry but unless you're really desperate a better bet is to try one of the quayside kiosks which provide information about hotels and rooms to let.

Book well in advance if you want to stay in any of the island's better hotels because they tend to get snapped up by the package holiday tour operators.

The road from the ferry dock to Livadia is lined with modern hotels which have the benefit of sea views and easy access to the beach but in the main are rather unexciting.

You'll find places with more character if you head into the old town though the noise can be bothersome unless you take to the quieter back streets. Hotel Dina is a delightful pension-style place reached through a flower filled courtyard. Rooms have views of either the plaza, the garden courtyard or the hills. The attentiveness of the owner Dina Patelis keeps faithful customers returning year after year.

Hotel Argonauta is a charming C-category hotel in the centre of town on the main square. The rooms are spotlessly clean, with marble flooring and balconies overlooking the street (but double glazing protects you from the hustle and bustle outside).

Budget travellers will find plenty of cheap and cheerful rooms to rent or there's the option of camping at one of the three sites near the port. Camping Koula at Livadia is a lively, hip place to be or head across the bay to Krios Camping on Krios Beach (there's a taxi boat service from Parikia every 10 minutes during high season). Parasporos Camping two kilometres south of Pirakia is a popular and well equipped site near Delphini beach.

Yria Hotel Bungalows, 2.5 kilometres of Parikia, offers A-category accommodation in beautifully landscaped gardens. The complex has a good beach nearby, extremely helpful staff and superb facilities including a fresh water pool, tennis and basketball courts, a children's playground and an excellent restaurant.

Some of the best hotels are located at the chic seaside resort of Naoussa in the north corner of the island.

The Astir of Paros is a deluxe resort for those with bulging wallets and a yen for some serious self-indulgence. You'll find it across the bay from Naoussa on the road to Kolimbithres - a lap of luxury complex in lush gardens with lovely lawns and towering palms. The hotel has a small private beach with watersports, a three-hole miniature golf course, tennis courts, a gym and some gorgeous suites. Sumptuous meals are created from produce grown on a local farm - the buffet breakfast consists more than 70 mouthwatering items.

For less ostentatious, more old-world elegance try the lovely Hotel Petres in a quiet location one kilometre outside town. The place is awash with antiques, the rooms have woven bedspreads and walls adorned with prints and the honeymoon suite contains the marriage bed of the owner's grandmother.

You'll also find hotels and rooms to let at the island's highest and prettiest village, Lefkes (an ideal base for walkers), Piso Livadi on the east coast and popular Chryssi Beach (Golden Beach) in the south east corner of Paros.
