Mykonos has a wide range of holiday accommodation from luxury hotels with all conceivable mod cons through to basic family run pensions and self-catering apartments. There are so many options available that you'll probably secure some kind of room even if you turn up in high season without a reservation. But if you're fussy about price and location make sure you book well in advance because the best places are snapped up months ahead of the summer tourist invasion.
If you arrive here by ferry you'll be greeted by an over-enthusiastic mob of domatia owners anxious to yank you into a waiting minibus. If you don't already have a reservation you might just have to take pot luck but don't commit yourself until you've checked out the room, price and facilities. Some owners will try to get away with charging you for transport from the ferry port to their accommodation even if you subsequently decide you don't want it.
It's important to familiarise yourself a little with the island before you decide where to stay. Much of the accommodation is centred in and around Mykonos Town (officially known as Hora) but if you actually want to sleep at night you'll be better off staying on the outskirts or even further afield. The town's narrow alleyways are chock-a-block with cheap pension-style hotels and dalmatia (rooms to let) - some quaint and full of character, others run-down and rather shabby looking.
At the top end of the market the Belvedere Hotel is one of the best hotels in town offering stunning views of the Aegean Sea, a lovely floodlit pool with poolside bar and first class facilities. This is the equivalent of a five-star hotel with an extensive range of modern facilities including a fitness suite, jacuzzis, steam bath, home cinema and CD / DVD library. The hotel restaurant, specialising in Mediterranean cuisine, is in a lovingly restored Mykonian mansion dating from 1850.
There are plenty of mid-range hotels and self-catering apartments to choose from on the roads leading to the north and south of the town, many with sea views and swimming pools. If you're not planning to rent a car or moped, check how far your chosen hotel is in terms of walking distance from the town especially if you want to be within easy reach of the local nightlife.
All the island's main beaches are flanked by hotels and apartments. One of the most luxurious places to stay outside Hora is the Princess of Mykonos Hotel which is in a wonderful location at Agios Stefanos to the north of the main town. Built in the typical Cycladic sugar-cube style with blue wooden shutters, the hotel has sumptuous rooms and spectacular sea views.
Discerning tourists with healthy bank accounts head for the Ano Mera Hotel at the inland village of the same name, 6 kilometres east of Mykonos Town. This is a top class hotel with a swimming pool, pool bar, disco and large rooms with balconies and spacious bathrooms. The hotel offers its guests free transport to local beaches and the town.
The island has two well-equipped campsites - one at Paradise Beach and the other at nearby Paraga Beach. Minibuses from both sites wait to snare potential customers as they disembark from the ferries.
