Car hire is not essential on Mykonos, especially if your holiday accommodation is within easy reach of the main town of Hora. Regular bus services connect the town with the main beaches to the north and south and taxis are plentiful.

A bus ride from the town to Platys Gialos on the south coast is cheap and only takes about 15 minutes. From there you can make use of the caiques (small ferry boats) to visit all the main beaches along the southern coastline, including Paradise and Super Paradise.
But if you're staying a few kilometres outside town you may want to hire a car or moped so you can explore the island's various beaches, visit the inland village of Ano Mera and pop into Hora for shopping, dining and sightseeing.
There are plenty of car hire and motorcycle / moped rental firms, mostly concentrated around the south bus station in Hora. Daily rates are reasonably cheap by northern European standards and you normally get a reduced rate if you hire a car for a week or more.
With a car you'll be able to visit the uncrowded beaches on the north side of the island. The north coast tends to be plagued by the often violent meltemi wind but there are a couple of fairly sheltered beaches in Panormos Bay which is worth a visit if only to escape the summer hordes gathered on the south coast. Head east out of Mykonos Town towards Ano Mera then take a left turn northwards towards Agios Sostis and Panormos. At Panormos you'll find a 100-metre stretch of fine sand backed by dunes and a little further north there's a lovely, unspoilt beach below the village of Agios Sostis.
A car will also enable you to explore the less frantic beaches of the more popular south coast. Visit the tiny cove of Ayia Anna, next to the fishing village of Kalafatis, and the easternmost beach of Lia, both of which manage to escape the masses who prefer the party beaches further west along the coast.
Even if you're not the world's greatest party animal, Paradise and Super Paradise are worth a visit because they're in a lovely setting and the antics of the young, beautiful things who congregate here have got to be seen to be believed.
Inland Mykonos is barren and not much to write home about but Ano Mera, six kilometres east of Hora is worthy of a few hours of your time. This is the island's only inland settlement, dominated by the 16th century monastery of Panagias Tourlianis which boasts a collection of Cretan icons, a small museum and an unusual 18th century baptism font made of marble. The village offers the most traditional flavour of anywhere on the island so stop for a spot of lunch in one of the many tavernas which flank the main square.
