More on Mykonos - Mykonos Accommodation - Mykonos Car Hire - Mykonos Tourist Attractions and Day Trips - Mykonos Night Life - Mykonos Greece

Mykonos has a wealth of beaches to suit all tastes. Nudists, round-the-clock party people, families and those seeking a respite from the madness of Mykonos will all be able to find a beach that fits the bill.

The most popular tourist beaches are to be found along the southern stretch of the island. The two most famous are Paradise and Super Paradise which are beautiful, packed and geared to the young clubbing set. The setting truly is paradisiacal but don't come here for a peaceful family picnic - music blares from huge loud speakers and during high season the beach partying often continues round-the-clock. This is a place where gorgeous go-go dancers sporting little more than the world's tiniest thongs gyrate obscenely on the bar and table tops. Bucket and spade types be warned!

Both beaches are nudist friendly. Super Paradise is the less crowded of the two by day with loud music and dancing dominating the left side in high season while the other end is mostly nudist and gay.

You can reach this stretch of coastline by bus from the southern bus station in Mykonos Town. The small ferry boats known as caiques pop from beach to beach during the high season months of June to September.

A short trip north east along the coast from Super Paradise you'll find the lovely sheltered cove of Agrari and to the east of that is Elia Beach, which is one of the longest on the island. It's a beautiful beach but is nearly as frantic as Paradise Beach. Kids and the young at heart will want to make a beeline for Watermania at Elia - a 60,000 square metre water park with dare devil chutes, a host of water-based activities, music and dancing.

Elia is the last main stopping point for the caiques but further east there are four more beaches - Kalo Livadi, Kalafatis, Ayia Anna and Lia. The last two are far less crowded than their neighbours to the west.

Family friendly beaches are to be found west of Paradise - these include Ornos, about 2.5 kilometres south of Mykonos Town, Platis Yialos which is a good base for exploring the more distant beaches via the caique service, and Psarou which is good for watersports. Here you can water ski, windsurf and hire diving equipment (which is unusual in the Greek Islands where diving is strictly controlled to prevent looting of underwater archaeological treasures).

Fans of Shirley Valentine will want to visit Agios Ionnis in the south west corner of the island as this was the setting for the Greek end of the film which stirred the souls of a generation of bored housewives.

All the main beaches on the south coast are well served with sunshades and sun beds, bars and tavernas.

The town beach between Hora and the ferry port is unexciting but a convenient and uncrowded place for a quick dip if your accommodation is nearby. The nearest beaches to the north of the town are Tourlos, 2 kilometres away, and Agios Stefanos another 2 kilometres further north. Both get extremely crowded in high season.

The handful of beaches on the north side of the island, in Panormos Bay, are plagued by the often violent "meltemi" north wind so few people make the trek over there except keen windsurfers. Panormos and Ayios Sostios beaches are fairly sheltered and have few tourist facilities so they offer a haven for beach lovers seeking a day's break from the crowds.
