When it comes to night time entertainment Lesvos offers all things to all people. There are pulsating night clubs where you can dance till dawn, many excellent traditional tavernas, gay bars, bouzouki joints, outdoor cinemas and colourful summer festivals.
If you're staying in the capital, Mytilini, you'll find a lively night scene mostly centred on or around the main harbourfront. There are masses of cheap and cheerful ouzeris where the locals tuck into tasty seafood mezedes and a glass or three of the local firewater which is produced on the island. Some ouzeris offer 30 or more varieties of the aniseed-flavoured raki which is distilled in factories in the Plomari district at the southern end of the island. Ermis Ouzeri and To Kalderimi in Ermou (the main commercial thoroughfare) are among the best choices in town.

For the best seafood meal in Mytilini follow the Greeks to no-frills O Stratos in Hristougennon. Or if you've had your fill of grilled octopus and other Greek fare, try the nearby Lemoni kai Prasino Piperi which offers delicious Italian dishes in an upstairs dining area overlooking the harbour. For reasonably priced good quality meat grills, Restaurant Averof in the centre of the southern waterfront near the local bus station is your best bet.
After dining you'll find plenty of late night action at both ends of the harbour. Bright young things hang out at Flame, on the north east side of the harbour, where the music blares downstairs and a neon bowling alley glows upstairs (yes, it actually has glow-in-the-dark balls and pins!). Besides the plethora of cocktail and music bars you could try the outdoor cinema which shows mainly American films in their original language. The Byzantine castle sometimes hosts live music and drama in the summer months.
The castle at Mithymna, at the northern end of the island, hosts a major festival of music and theatre throughout July and August attracting performers from all over Europe (ask at the town hall or local tourist office for details). Like Mytilini, the town also has a lively nightlife with an outdoor cinema, plenty of good eateries and all-night dance spots. Conga's Beach Club and Gatelousi Bar churn out cheap shots, cocktails and chart hits till the small hours. Or if you're more into traditional Greek music head for Vangelis Bouzouki Club, a ten-minute walk from town on the road to Efthalou.
Traditional celebrations are held at villages all over the island in July and August and although these are supposedly religious feasts in honour of various patron saints they invariably involve much feasting, dancing and general merrymaking. The islanders race elaborately decorated horses and a bull is sacrificed and cooked overnight. Ask at tourist information offices for details.
The popular seaside resort of Skala Eresou on the island's west coast is a hive of activity after dark. Music bars and cafes spill onto the beach which is a wonderful place to sip an ouzo and watch the sun go down over the nearby mountains. This is a lively resort where gay friendly bars cater for the lesbian visitors who are drawn to this town of the poet Sappho's birthplace. Revellers often end up in the Aegean for a midnight dip after an evening's drinking and dining.
