Lesvos offers a huge variety of accommodation to suit the diverse tastes and budgets of the holiday hordes which descend on the island each summer. There are large hotels geared to package holidaymakers, self-catering villas and bungalows ideal for families, lovely old mansion houses and women-only hotels for the gay groups who are drawn to the birthplace of the Lesbian poet Sappho. If you're planning to visit the island in August it's a good idea to make a reservation because the most popular hotels are booked up weeks and even months in advance.

There are plenty of inexpensive domatia (rooms to rent) in the capital Mytilini, mostly located in the side streets leading off the main thoroughfare Ermou near the northern harbour. There are several hotels along the waterfront but they're relatively pricey and noise can be a problem at night.
If you fancy some old-world grandeur, then the stately Pyrgos of Mytilene at the southern end of town near Agias Irinis Park is the place for you. This lovingly restored mansion was built in 1916 and is now a luxurious 12-room hotel which oozes century-old elegance from its beautiful antique furnishings and chandeliers. But there's nothing dated about the room facilities which include air-conditioning, cable television and minibars.
Nearby Villa 1900 is another favourite spot among those who shun all things modern, concrete and packaged. This fine neoclassical mansion has nine rooms, including three in the converted garret, and is full of reminders of a bygone era (including iron beds, old family photos and ornate painted ceilings).
In the picture-postcard town of Mithymna, at the northern end of the island, there's a plentiful supply of domatia and several C-class hotels near the waterfront below the old town. One of the most charming places to stay here is the Hotel Olive Press, a converted olive oil factory down at the seafront. This popular hotel has a beautiful inner courtyard, gardens, elegant furnishings and tennis courts. A cheaper option preferred by backpackers is the excellent Camping Mithymna site 1.5 kilometres outside the town.
There are numerous hotels and apartments at the popular resort of Petra, five kilometres south of Mithymna. But for something a bit different contact the Women's Agricultural Tourism Collective (you'll find them upstairs in the central plateia) which can arrange accommodation in family homes in the village.
At the island's busiest and best-known resort of Skala Eresou on the west coast there are plenty of hotels, pensions and apartments to choose from including a couple of women-only hotels.
One of the most romantic places to stay on the island is in a 100-year-old converted windmill, one kilometre from Skala Eresou beach. A wooden spiral staircase leads to the first floor bedroom where French windows give stunning views of the nearby volcanic mountains and surrounding countryside.
More holiday accommodation is available at the seaside resorts along the south coast including a camp site 100 metres from the beautiful beach at Vatera.
