A plentiful supply of hotels, pensions and self-catering studios can be found in the ports and main coastal resorts of Leros. You'll have a good chance of finding a decent enough room even if you arrive on spec in high season because mass tourism has not yet extended its tendrils to this peaceful island which is only just waking up to its potential as a package holiday destination.
Some of the holiday accommodation gets blocked booked in the summer months by tour operators, especially in the longest established seaside resort of Alinda on the east coast. But independent travellers will generally be able to seek out a reasonably priced bed for the night especially if they steer clear of the more popular holiday spots.
Few people choose to stay in the main port town of Lakki but there are a number of comfortable hotels and studios here if you want to stay overnight in order to catch an early morning ferry. Most visitors make a beeline for the east coast resorts of Pandeli and Alinda Bay. Pandeli is the better option for non-package holiday accommodation, offering a good selection of clean and comfortable pensions and self-catering studios, many with wonderful views of the bay. Pension Happiness, situated where the road down from Platanos meets the sea, is one of the most popular budget options or try the slightly more upmarket Niki Studios which has partial sea views. Pension Rodon, near the main road between Pandeli and Platanos, also offers clean, comfortable and inexpensive rooms but noise from next door Dimitris Taverna (one of the island's top dining spots) can be a problem. The Rodon is open throughout the year unlike much of the island's holiday accommodation which shuts down from October to April.
If you want to stay in the hilltop capital Platanos, which is a good base for exploring the rest of the island, the Eleftheria Hotel near the taxi rank offers decent C-category facilities with a large swimming pool and studios which can sleep two or four.
Alinda Bay, with the twin resorts of Krithoni and Alinda, is lined with apartments and modern hotels including the swish Krithoni Paradise which is one of the island's best offerings in terms of creature comforts. The complex consists of 69 rooms, two suites and a VIP villa set in lush gardens close to the sea. Facilities include a lovely swimming pool satellite TV, a good restaurant and air conditioning throughout.
If you're more interested in old-world charm than modern facilities, head for Hotel Archontiko Angelou at Alinda - a traditional mansion home built in 1895 and still run by a descendant of the original owners. This delightful building retains many of its original features and offers its guests the luxury of breakfast in bed or under the large trees which protect the hotel from the summer heat. Savour home-made bread, jam and pastries in this nine-bedroom oasis which oozes the serenity of a bygone age. The owners will even make you up a picnic basket if you're going off for a day's exploring.
The south coast resort of Xirokambos has rooms to rent and the island's only camp site, located in an olive grove set back from the bay at Lepida. The shaded site has a scuba diving centre, a small restaurant and a bar. Like many of the campsites in the Greek islands the ground is rather hard so a free standing tent is an advantage.
