The majority of visitors to Lefkada stay in the two main resorts of Nydri on the east coast and Vassiliki at the southern end of the island. If you plan to visit either resort in July and August it's essential to book ahead. Tour operators block book accommodation in Nydri months in advance and Vassiliki is besieged by holidaying windsurfers throughout the summer.
The capital, Lefkada Town, is not the best place to pitch up on spec if you're an independent traveller looking for budget accommodation. Domatia are hard to find and there's only a small number of hotels which are relatively pricey compared with other island capitals. One of the swishest places to bed down for the night is the recently refurbished Ionian Star, right on the waterfront with wonderful views over the harbour. The hotel has a good range of facilities including a lovely figure-of-eight outdoor pool, hair salon, a roof garden with a cocktail bar and a 24-hour shop stocked with various local products and gifts.
Other smart hotels in the capital include the Santa Maura, the grandiose Lefkas and the Nirikos. Those on a tight budget should try Hotel Byzantio on Dorpfeld where accommodation is relatively cheap albeit rather basic and a trifle noisy.
Plenty of domatia are available in Liyia, four kilometres south of the capital and there's a shady camp site at nearby Kariotes.
The busy resort of Nydri is chock full of rooms, studios and hotels but room are hard to come by unless you book through a tour operator well in advance. One of the best places to stay here is the family-run Hotel Gorgon, set in a lush flower-filled garden on the road out to Rahi. If you're foolhardy enough to arrive In Nydri in high season without a booking try Samba Tours who may be able to help you find accommodation.
From Nydri you can take a boat over to the unspoilt island of Meganisi where you can stay a night or two, either in the island's only hotel or in simple rooms which you can find by asking for help in local tavernas.
DhesSymi Bay, to the south of Nydri on the other side of the Yeni Peninsula, has two campsites at each end of the beach - Santa Maura Camping and DhesSymi Beach Camping. But there's a far superior site at Vassiliki Bay, largely catering for the hordes of young windsurfers and watersports enthusiasts who flock here each summer. The waterfront site is well run and has a great atmosphere and facilities including a bar, restaurant, minimarket, laundry and showers.
Vassiliki is home to the Club Vass and Wildwind adventure holiday centres which organise all-in package deals with flights, accommodation, sports and leisure facilities included. The nearby Porto Rico Hotel provides upmarket accommodation, including four-bed family rooms, right on the beach.
On the island's west coast there are hotels, rooms to rent and a camp site at the picturesque resort of Agios Nikitas. You can also find holiday accommodation at the small seaside village of Kathisma and in the more remote hill villages of Kalamitsi and Athani.
