If you hire a car or moped for a few days during your stay on Lefkada you'll be able to explore the delightful, unspoilt villages of the interior and uncover lovely tranquil coves which are a world apart from the busy tourist resorts of Nydri and Vasiliki. Cars, motorbikes and scooters are available for hire from a number of large rental firms and small local outfits in the capital, Lefkada Town.

With the benefit of your own transport you'll be able to make forays into the mountainous centre of the island to visit a number of scenic villages including Karya, south west of the capital, which is the main focus of the island's lacemaking and weaving industries. Stop for lunch in one of the tavernas on the tree-shaded village square and visit the local museum, housed in the home of a local lacemaker.
Drive south of Karya to the pretty villages of Vafkeri and Englouvi which are virtually untouched by tourism. From Vafkeri the road leads south east towards the island's busiest resort, Nydri, passing a waterfall at Rahi. From Nydri you can take your car or moped on the ferry over to the magical islet of Meganisi which is worth a day's exploration in itself. Ferries dock at Porto Spilia from where you can take the steep one kilometre road up to the pristine, whitewashed village of Spartahori. From there the road leads through gorgeous countryside to the inland village of Katomeri which is a popular lunch spot for day trippers from Lefkada. Paths from the village lead to remote beaches and there's a road down to the second port of Vathy which boasts several first-rate tavernas.
Back on Lefkada you can find plenty of quiet beaches, especially in the south west corner of the island where startling turquoise water laps lovely stretches of near white sand. Head down the west coast to the best beaches of Kathisma, Egremni and Porto Katsiki. From Kathisma you might want to do a detour inland to the unspoilt hilltop hamlets of Dhrymonas and Exanthia.
The west coast road terminates at lonely Cape Lefkatas where the poet Sappho reputedly hurled herself into the sea in the 7th century BC after being spurned by her female lover.
If you're staying in the capital you don't have to drive far to find a decent beach which never suffers from over-crowding even in high season. The four-kilometre long Yiras beach is on the western side of the lagoon - holidaymakers without their own transport are deterred by the 40-minute walk from the town centre and prefer to take buses out to the more popular resorts.
Drive south west out of Lefkada Town through the tiny village of Frini to the uninhabited Faneromeni Monastery where you can enjoy fabulous views of the town and lagoon. The monastery has a small museum and chapel.
