The Kythnos night scene is essentially low-key because few international tourists visit the island and those that do are generally looking for an alternative to the madness of Mykonos and the other party playgrounds of the archipelago. A waterfront sundowner followed by a meal in one of the local tavernas is the usual way to spend an evening here but if you're looking for something a bit livelier you'll find a handful of music bars and dance spots in the small port of Merihas.
The port is the place to eat out if you're a seafood fan - some of the fish is so fresh it's still flapping when you choose it! Ostria and Sailors Restaurant, both on the waterfront, are among the best places for fish or head for Taverna tou Kandouni near the port police if you're more of a meat eater. The taverna has tables right by the water and serves up excellent grilled meat dishes; it also has rooms to let. Yialos and Restaurant Kissos both offer good quality standard Greek fare at reasonable prices.

Retire to the Byzantio Club for a late night cocktail or pop along to New Corner, 100 metres along the road towards Dryopida, if you like Greek folk music.
Head up the hill to the right of the harbour to Agnanti for late night dance music or try Remezzo on the waterfront where chart hits and Greek pop are churned out till the small hours. The hottest dance spot in town is Akrotiri, perched on the headland above the south end of the harbour beyond Agnanti. It's a mellow "coffee and ice-cream" type of place in the early evening but transforms into a throbbing disco after 11pm. There's a huge outdoor dance floor and two bars on multi-level balconies.
The capital Hora and the tourist centre of Loutra in the north east corner of the island have some good tavernas serving local specialties but don't expect much in the way of late night entertainment after your meal.
Traditional festivals take place throughout the year and if your visit coincides with one of them you'll be able to join in the feasting, dancing and general merrymaking which are all part of the Greek way of honouring their patron saints.
The biggest festivals take place on August 15th and September 8th at the church of Panagia Kanala in the south east of the island. The locals play violins, sing, dance and set off fireworks to celebrate the feast days of the church's patron saint, the Virgin Mary. Symilar celebrations take place in Hora on July 20th when the islanders dine and dance on the mountainside during the festival of Agios Ilias. Check with the tourist office in the port for details of other local festivities.
