More on Kythira - Kythira Accommodation - Kythira Car Hire - Kythira Tourist Attractions and Day Trips - Kythira Night Life - Kythira Greece

Kythira is blessed with some of the best beaches in Greece and because the island is not a major package holiday destination (yet!) you'll have no trouble finding a secluded cove all to yourself. There's only one busy resort area totally geared to tourism and beyond it the coastline offers a wealth of sand and pebble stretches, some of which can only be reached by boat.

Kapsali at the southern end of the island is the place where most visitors choose to stay and consequently it's well served with bars, restaurants and other tourist facilities. The resort's twin bays are well protected by the strong meltemi summer winds and provide welcome anchorage for passing yachts and safe swimming for children. Various watersports are available including water ski-ing, canoeing and pedaloes. It's a picturesque place overlooked by the Venetian castle of Hora and backed by steep cliffs. But the beach tends to get crowded in high season so you might prefer to head for one of the many quieter spots along the coastline.

A much prettier and quieter beach is Chalkos in the south east corner of the island reached via a rough track leading down from the Hora-Kalamos road.

If you hire a boat you can spend a few relaxing hours on the small but captivating pebble beach of Kiriakoulou, on the south coast between Kapsali and Chalkos. It's not accessible by road so you won't be bothered by hordes of fellow tourists.

The nearest good sandy beach to Kapsali is Firi Ammos, north east of the village of Kalamos at the end of a four-kilometre track. The beach has a rare type of red sand and was named one of the best beaches in Greece by the Greek National Tourism Organisation. Despite its natural beauty this long and spacious beach never suffers from over-crowding even in July and August.

The island's most beautiful beach, Symilarly recognised by the GNTO, is stunning Kaladi accessed via a rough track leading off the road to Paleopoli. Steep steps lead onto the pebble beach with its cliff-backed coves and caves and strange rock formation jutting out to sea.

Beyond Paleopoli there's the picturesque fishing village of Avlemonas which has a wide pebbled beach and the excellent Sotiris seafood taverna - the perfect place to splurge on fresh lobster (as long as you're not counting your Euros).

The main port of Agia Pelagia has a town beach and five other sand and pebble beaches within easy walking distance to the south of the village. Locals tend to favour secluded Lorenzo Beach, just past the monastery-capped hill.

There's good swimming off the white sandy beach at Diakofti, the island's hydrofoil port. And over on the other side of the island there's a dramatic clifftop drive out to the small sandy beach of Limnionas.
