Kefalonia has been a popular package holiday destination since the 1990s and offers a good range of accommodation from quality hotels and campsites to self-catering studios and apartments. Many hotels are block booked several months in advance by the tour operators but independent travellers who arrive without a reservation in high season can be reasonably sure of securing a cheap and cheerful room in one of the many domatia in Argostoli and Sami.

You'll see plenty of domatia advertised in the back streets of the capital Argostoli and you can seek help in finding short notice accommodation at both the tourist office and the Self-Catering Association of Kefalonia, both on the northern waterfront near the port police.
There are plenty of hotels in town, most of which stay open all year round but they tend to be relatively pricey compared with those of other Greek island capitals. One of the most stylish hotels here is the Ionian Plaza, right on the central square. The comfortable rooms have all mod cons and views onto the palm-fringed square which is the main focus of Argostoli's daytime activity and vibrant nightlife.
Local travel agents including Ainos Travel opposite the Archaeological Museum and Myrtos on Antoni Tristi can help you find villas and apartments to rent elsewhere on the island.
The island has two camp sites - Argostoli Beach Camping two kilometres north of the capital and a far superior site at Karavomylos, 800 metres west of the main port of Sami. The beachfront Sami site has 300 shady pitches and is well equipped with all manner of facilities including a minimarket, bar, restaurant, laundry, hot showers, playground and Internet access.
There are also rooms to rent at Karavomylos but accommodation in the port itself can be hard to come by in high season as this is a popular base for exploring the rest of the island.
Three big hotels on the outskirts of Sami cater largely for package holidaymakers - the Sami beach and Athina Beach at the far end of Karavomylos and the well-equipped Pericles, a couple of kilometres from the town centre on the road out to Argostoli. The Pericles offers extensive facilities including two pools, a disco and tennis court but you'll be lucky to get a room in high season without an advance reservation.
Last minute accommodation in the seaside resort of Skala in the south east corner of the island is Symilarly hard to come by. Independent travellers will have more hope of finding a room at Poros, 12 kilometres north along the coast from Skala. Various types of accommodation are available through Poros Travel by the ferry dock.
The seaside resort of Lassi in the south west of the island is awash with hotels and apartments mostly geared to tour groups. If you fancy spoiling yourself head for the upmarket White Rocks Hotel and Bungalow Complex at Platys Yialos. It's arguably the most elegant hotel on the island, located above two beaches (the smaller of which is for the exclusive use of hotel guests).
Hotel rooms are at a premium in Fiskardo, Kefalonia's most picturesque village at the northern end of the island. Rooms are booked well in advance and the tourist season here extends into October.
